Where to go next?

Hey all!

I’m new to Elite Dangerous and really enjoy it so far. I’m having a bit of trouble though; I’ve only been between the starting three star systems doing deliveries and courier missions, and I’ve finally got a new ship and ready to go exploring, but don’t know where to go. Here’s my questions:

1. The nearest star systems to where I am show “Anarchy” or that they’re simulated battlegrounds, I prefer to avoid conflict if possible, but:

2. I’m concerned that I won’t be able to find a station or outpost to dock at, and might get lost out in the void. Are stations common or only at a few select star systems?

3. I’ve been attacked a few times while doing missions and feel completely helpless, it’s hard to target the enemy and fight them, but I prefer to just high-tail it out of there if possible. Is this an option and if so, how? I tried and they just followed me.

Pizza Hut.

Someone mentioned anarchy! 😀

1. These are probably uninhabited, but if they are populated, you've got lawless systems where there's no system security, a guaranteed black market to sell off those stolen goods and a commodity market with no pesky rules on what constitutes illegal goods. Paradise basically.

2. Any populated system will have a station of some description. Some don't have room for large ships, but if you make sure you always have a fuel scoop and remember KGB FOAM for all the scoopable star types, you should be fine.

3. Probably be the best thing right now is evade the interdictions. One day you will have an engineered deathbringer battlecruiser, but that isn't now. Picking your battles is key and you need to make sure you're comfortable with combat before taking on NPCs that interdict you.

There are good systems in which to make money, but they all look alike, the view from the cockpit is the same, and within a few hours all the missions seem the same, so it matters not what you do or where you do it.

Don't worry too much about stations, just make sure you have a fuel scoop and set the filter on your galaxy map to only show systems with star types KGBFOAM as these are the scoopable stars, that way you are fairly safe, and can stay in the black for as long as you like. Now as for the pirates, so long as you have nothing in your cargo when you go exploring then no pirates will ever bother you.

Where are you and what ship did you buy ?

The mechanics are a bit overwelming to start what I did from the starter system in my Cobra was travel a few Ly to Ehecatl Hackworth base ran quiet a few missions to rank up (transport 40T and data) build a bit of reserve creds and upgrade the FSD to 4A( in the Cobra) and D rate the rest after that running between L 119-33 and Nanabozo then I bought a 3A fuel scoop a Detailed Discovery Scanner DSS and did the road to riches (Google) about 40 + systems scanning specific planets set out in the guide that got me my first 140,000,000 in data and exploration rank and the rest is history

Grab a fuel scoop, make sure you have a full selection of scanners, pick a direction and go.. I suppose you could try the tourist traps like Colonia or Sag A*, but I find more interesting things off the beaten tracks.

Really? I'm yet to find 2 systems alike.. And I'll be very surprised if I find another dual binary system (2 binary pairs) with a bunch of WW and high grade gas giants.. That one also had a Water Giant.

Well no that is not very good advice. I would recommend choosing a "Home System" and do missions and stuff from that system. As you learn more about the game you might change your "Home System" to a better location. Or have a couple homes.

The reason I recommend this is reputation. As your rep in an area gets better you get better paying missions. Substantially better. If you keep wandering around going wherever the next trade mission takes you... your rep will never increase and you won't get better paying missions.

Things to consider for a home system are:
  • How close a station is to the star. Nice to be close for short travel distance.
  • Does your Home Base station have good services? Ship Yard, Outfitting, maybe interstallar factors or a material trader.
  • Would you prefer your home base near the edge of the bubble or in the interior?
  • Do you prefer some faction (Empire, Federation, Alliance).

Edit
I'm mostly an explorer but I still have a home location in the bubble. Its my base where I leveled up trade and imperial ranks, keep my ships and most stored modules. I usually sell exploration data there too. They always greet me with a nice welcome. Also a home locaion in Colonia (far far away).

Road to Riches is not exploration, it's a credit grind. Not even a particularly good one any more. I make more doing full scans of systems as I explore - and there's no magic list for me to work from. Just did a run from Sag A* to Pekoe in the Colonia bubble, about 80% previously undiscovered, with a bunch of WW/ELW and other nice earners. Takes a little longer than R2R but also pays in more than just Cr.

Yes but this is a new Cmdr who hasnt learnt about the mechanics yet I remember struggling with navigation and finding it all rather a lot and to me it felt like a big exploration
