Where to shoot my first pirate?

Hello folks,

I've been playing a few months so I have got past the "I can barely take off and land" stage of the learning curve. Recently I got a joystick and I'm now able to at least land a hit on another ship in the Arena play mode. I have never destroyed a ship, but I have hit one (I also rammed into him LOL).

So now, I've just bought some size-2 and size-1 lasers for my Cobra MkIII, and I want to go shoot a pirate. But I want to start with an easy mission and all the pirate missions at this station are "Expert" level.

What station has a pirate mission for absolute beginners? Is there a way tell using EDDB or one of those sites?

Here is my ship. I can barely understand this page, but it shows the lasers I have.

Thanks for any help.

My suggestion to the question posed in the topic: IN THE BACK. No need to play fair with pirate scum! If you're simply itching to try combat against pirates, I'd suggest giving it a go at a Resource Extraction Site (of the low hazard variety). Make sure the cops are close by and open fire at a wanted ship. Only try the missions once you're confident with your combat skills and ship loadout.

No way to tell in advance, as the missions are random. You do tend to get better missions when your reputation with the faction improves - but that's not going to solve your issue.

Easiest kills are in Nav beacons and low RES - follow the police around, scan what they are shooting at and, once they scan as wanted, join in. Just don't shoot the police...

Or find another player (or group) and wing up.

Wrt. weapons, I'd recommend replacing the small lasers with multicannons. Lasers for stripping shields, kinetic weapons for shredding trough the hull after the shields go down.

As above - practice in a lo-res, I used the rings in Asellus Primus when I was a noob but I believe that is no longer a starting point for new pilots.
Be careful to only target pilots that are not in a wing. You do not want to fall prey to a wing.
My cobra III has medium beams and small multicannons and that will never change, however over time it has been engineered to the hilt.
Don't forget you can synthesise ammo for the multis that will increase their punch without engineering.

I guess I have a newbie question, but what does lo-res area mean? Low-resources? Also how do I tell if an area is lo-res?

I may just give a try at looking around some asteroid areas.

Right now I'm in Nemehi which I think has a lot of planets, so hopefully I can find a pirate there.

Low Res, High Res, Haz Res are sites in the rings of gas giants where there'll be npc miners, pirates and police (in the first two only). Go to a Low Res, follow the police around, wait until they open fire on someone, target them, wait until you see the target is wanted in your lower left panel and then start shooting. Don't shoot the police, they don't like that and don't open fire on someone without confirming they're wanted

Okay so I just flew around for a while but I got lost and never found any RES sites. What I ended up doing was going to a big planet with rings on accident (I forgot about the gas giant part and just went where I saw some rings). When I got there I found a sort of hidden space station which I could not land on.

So then I went to a planet and tried to land there, but the game said I was in a "no-go" zone or something and fined me 400 credits.

So after that I decided to go back to a place I knew I could land at for gas and to pay the fine.

Next time I'll look for a gas giant. But I think I'll have to go to another system. I don't think they had one wherever I was.

But I did get the multicannons. At least there's that much progress.

Thanks everybody.

ny system sporting an "Low RES", once there, keep an eye on the cops, when they target some one, hang around until the target shield are down to about 20 25 percent, then making sure not to accidentally shoot a cop, shoot the target. You'll get their bounty and credit towards your eventual Combat Elite status. The more you do it, the easier it becomes and eventually you won't wait for the cops.

Go to any system with ringed planets. When you're within 1000 LS of any of them, look in your Nav panel to see Resource Extraction Site (RES). You get low, nothing, high and hazardous in brackets. Low is low ranked ships with low bounties, high is high rank ships with high bounties. Both have police to help you. Hazardous has no police and the ranks are high. Activity in the low RES can also be low., which can make it very boring.

Low RES is good for practicing one-on-one fighting in a weak ship. High RES gets the highest bounty earning rate and the fastest combat ranking. The best RESs are in high population systems. My favourites are LTT 15574, Kremainn, Brani and Freng. Dromi in the starter area is also good.

You can also go to nav beacons, where police will help you depending on the security level of the system, but activity levels are much lower than in a RES.

Finally, you can use a FSD interdictor to pull wanted ships out of super cruise. To fight them on your own, switch off "report crimes against me" in the left panel, otherwise cops will come and help you depending on the system's security.. Just cruise around between the station and the star until you find a suitable "wanted" target.

Thanks D8veh that's a great/simple explanation, I will give that a try.

I had just found what I think is the magic website to finding these RES places. I was going to go to one of these places but I think now that you say Dromi I might go there. But I'm not sure if I'm still allowed at Dromi, so I might not.

Here is the website.

But then again if I can go to Dromi I'll try that. I'll see if it works.

Thanks all.

Okay so it turns out the local place all the RES were high. So I decided to try and get as close to Dromi as I could, which was LSE 239. So now I'm here at the RES and I'm just going to look around. I keep seeing stuff on my radar and "1 new contact" combined with "1 contact lost" so I know somebody is here somewhere. I just have to find them. And I just got scanned.

Aha I also just saw the 2 police ships destroy another ship. So now I'm going to follow them around.

Okay this was more fun than delivering stuff. I'm going to dock and take a little break. Thanks everybody.
After you've handed in a load of bounties, you become friendly with the controlling faction, which then turns the police green, which makes it much easier to differentiate between the good and the bad guys. Be careful, though, not all the yellow ships are bad. Always wait for the "wanted" to show on your hud.

If you go to a high RES, you get a lot more money. It's quite safe as long as you follow these rules:
1. Don't shoot the police
2. Don't shoot an Anaconda, Gunship, Cheiftain or Krait unless you checked in the 4th tab in your left panel whether the target ship is carrying a fighter hanger (towards the bottom of the list). If it is, as soon as you shoot, the fighter will attack you from behind, so you'd need a strong ship to deal with both. best to wait until the police get the mothership down to 10%, then give a short burst with 4 pips to shields. if at any time the fighter pops, it won't bother you after that.

In the beginning, concentrate on moving your pips to shields when under fire, weapons when you have clear shots and engines when you want to get behind the target. You need to get that working automatically by muscle memory before going on to the next steps. When you have 24 million, you can get a Vulture and concentrate on thruster control.

Well, everybody said not to shoot the security ships and I tried not to. But for whatever reason my auto-cannon was firing on a pirate ship, and the security ship passed right in front of me.

It was kind of funny, I kept shooting the bad guy and I almost had him! But the security ships kept shooting me until there was not much I could do. At first I didn't even know it was them shooting me. If I had known maybe I could have jumped out of there. But by the time I figured it out it was too late.

They sent me to some kind of jail where I bought my ship back for about 300k credits. Then I had to jump through maybe 10 systems to get back to Nemehi which is nearby that system I was in.

Is there a way to stop the auto-cannon from shooting? It seems to get into some kind of auto-fire mode after I activate it with the trigger of this HOTAS.

I am going to fiddle with the HOTAS and give it another try. I think it's supposed to auto-fire forever.

The guy who made this HOTAS script says the fire mode is either pulse or endless. So I must have had it on endless by accident? That's my best guess. I'm going to try the other direction for this toggle switch and see if it happens again.

Funnily enough it seems that my computer lost all its data. I guess with the new ship I get a new computer.

This time there were no pirates so I just followed the police ships around for a while. Got a lot of practice flying.
