Newcomer / Intro Where to!

Hello! I am new to the game, and I am loving it :) I am confident now with the controls and would like to start doing some combat.

Looking around the internet, I was advised to travel to resource extraction sites, which I did, and got my handed to me :D

What is the best way to get started (I have done tutorials).

Also - should I be aligned with any faction/grinding particular rep etc?

Any help appreciated :D Ian

In my opinion the best place to start is a Nav Beacon, they tend to have a few bad guys that you can attack after you have scanned them to see the wanted notice, there will also be police/security ships there the best thing at first is to only attack the wanted ships the police are attacking as at first in the starter systems you won’t have access to the best equipment.

I only align with factions and bother to do missions to rank up with one of the navies or earn a permit. I wouldn’t bother about that yet wait until you are more confident in your skills.

Thanks for the quick reply :) I'm on my way to a Nav Beacon now

Are there any reps I will need to grind if I want to buy 'the best' ships? I may as well start wearing rep early if there is ;)

Start gathering materials from your kills asap. Scan NPC ships during super cruise for data.

Choose a system with a lot of factions of either FED/IMP to start making rep already. But focus on not getting blown up too much.

As for Best ship: There is no best ship. Unless you have a very specific job in mind. If I was starting again. I would buy and equip a Vulture. Cause in my opinion..This IS the best ship.. (not for exploring offcourse) I have the most fun in it regardless. It served me well all the way up to combat Elite

Some ships are only available when you reach certain ranks in the Federal or Imperial navies, they have Federal or Imperial* in the name all the other ships in the game just require you to have enough money to buy and outfit them**.
There is no end point in the game so there is no requirement to rush and grind unless you like to play that way. But as @GroG79 says gather up materials when you find them as you will probably want them later.

* The Imperial Eagle is an exception to this so you can just buy it.
** Ships are rubbish when bought so allow three to five times the purchase price to cover the increased rebuy cost and basic improvements to the modules, more to bring it up to all the best modules.

You could try missions also. There should be some "novice" ones that are ranked harmless. The bonus of these is that they are linked to factions, minor as well as Federation and Empire depending where you are. The latter will give you rank increases that do open up certain ships - for example, the Federal Corvette and the Imperial Cutter. Be awae that grind is involved!

Welcome to elite.

As a new pilot, it's probably best to give a bit of everything a go until you find things you enjoy doing.

Something you may want to lean towards is grinding faction rank but probably more important for the longer term game is unlocking and applying engineering to your ships.

But dont worry about that too much now, concentrate on becoming proficient at the basics - taking off, landing, high wake, low wake, winning interdictions and basic outfitting.

Add combat at a nav beacon (or compromised nav beacon), using a kill warrant scanner and how and where to trade in bounties as well as pip management and using fire groups together with targeting sub systems.

There's loads there when I see it written down!

Fly safe - always with rebuy!

Lots of good advice here.

RES combat is among the easiest in the game, if you're careful. An un-engineered ship isn't all that tough, so that's essential. Avoid Haz-RES combat where you may not find any system authority ships. Other RES combat (low to high) just scales the number and types of opponents but you'll have authority ships present. Those are useful for beginning-combat because you can just watch them weaken opponents to almost nothing, then take just a couple of shots at them to earn a bounty when they're destroyed.

I remember beginning too. One of the hardest things is to be patient enough to actually do that, but it's the way to go.

Each encounter like that gains you experience in maneuvering your ship, in expectations of what it takes to kill an enemy, and other things. This may not seem like it's happening when you're doing it, but it does and it is really valuable experience for you to gain.

Have fun out there, CMDR!

Best way to get started in combat? Get a ship with some hitscan weapons (lasers are ok), go into a low RES and follow the cops around. If you find them shooting at someone, target their victim, wait until he shows up WANTED in your HUD and try to get a shot in edgewise. Don't hit the police or an innocent bystander (or any other ship that hasn't scanned as WANTED on your HUD).

Aligning with factions - your choice. You can grind for rank with empire and/or federation, which gets you access to their special ships. Getting ranked up with local factions gets you access to better paying missions. If you want, you can declare your support for one of the PowerPlay factions - usually considered more of an end-game activity, though. That can get you some power specific bonus as well as access (after 3 weeks earliest) to some power specific equipment.

If you want to participate in PvP (other than as a rapidly expanding cloud of gas and shrapnel), you practically have to go through the Engineers, which will also require you to engage in practically any activity ED has to offer to unlock them. Engineering your ship is also pretty much required if you want to go into combat zones (CZs) - the NPCs there usually also fly moderately engineered (and fully combat equipped) ships.

Depends how you do it. I got both the Imperial and Fed ranks to unlock the big ships just by hanging out in appropriate systems and doing my normal game play. Had the Cutter unlocked for a couple of months before buying one. Needed a ship with a big cargo capacity and the Cutter seemed nicer than a Type 9. Have the Fed rank, but still not bought a Corvette. Have the cash and the mats to engineer it. Just don’t see the need for one.
