Where's my mission??

Picked up one of these pirate massacre missions, I've got a planet as a mission target. Which I've scanned, and probed, and sat around for ages waiting for a USS to appear. No joy.

There are a few sites on the planet, but none of them are saying they're related to the mission. What gives? What do I need to do these days? Why is this game so confusing (still, after 6 years).

maybe you took one of those missions which require a surface installation scan to reveal the pirates/terrorist/ location? something like "interact with the hub terminal". if so, mission text would have said so. what does your mission screen say now?

All I can suggest is to go scan the nav beacon to see if it gives you some signal source targets in supercruise.

I'm not in game now, else I'd look, but it's possible that the faction have retreated? It's a long shot idea, and I don't know if that would invalidate the targets appearing, but that's the only other thing I can think of - you'd be unlucky though. Try the nav beacon first if they are still in the system.

Yeah, I did FSS the entire area and did find some POIs that way, but noooo where near the planet. Like, ~ 30Kls away, which I rinsed. But the planet is still showing as mission objective.

Planet is still lit up like a christmas tree, just nothing else there. This particular planet is atmospheric too, so can't go down on this one.

On missions like this I tend to scan all ships I see and interdict the ones that count as mission targets. (You could try RES or CZ's for the same thing but you might be wanted after the first kill). I find interdictions better because at the mission POI's you definitely need to knock out FSD/Drives super fast, to stop them running away.

Space Missions often highlight the planet and have POI (that is orbiting the planet). Both don't always show up until you scan the Nav Beacon / FSS the system (often you will just see the planet in blue because the POI is in a wide orbit and too far away to auto-resolve).

I do sometimes wonder if anyone on these forums actually plays (or pays attention to the screen when playing) ;)

Unless it's "Trade Lanes". In big binary systems, they can be quite painful if in trade lanes between the two stars, as they'll spawn anywhere on that route :(

Asking 'where is the settlement I need to scan?' when sitting at the nav beacon would be a similar question.

Massacre missions in my experience are usually related to combat zones, lock on to the CZ and check the factions match up in the mission info box top right of your screen

Indeed, and this used to be the case, rock up to a planet and a POI would become apparent around a planet. But this isn't happening in this instance.

40 pirates for a mere 4.8m?

Ooof - looks like there's a zero missing.

I know! Allegedly somebody on youtube said this was the place to go. Absolute joke, best I could pick up, and it's largely flying 30Kls to POI with a couple of pirates in. Only had one good fight. Thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and try it, but it's terrible.

There are no Combat Zones, or Resource Extraction Sites of any kind in this system. A standard Nav Beacon is as juicy as it gets. 0/10 would not massacre here again.

Yeah I normally avoid those missions - different story if you pick up combat vounchers from CZs (those are not pirate missions), they pay a lot more and are a bit easier to complete in terms of time investment (I don't like their grindy nature particularly given the often tight timelines involved, so don't do them often at all either) - if you're just after bounty hunting, working a Haz RES for an hour or less can yield north of 10m easily since the combat payout buff.
