Where's my mission??

I know! Allegedly somebody on youtube said this was the place to go. Absolute joke, best I could pick up, and it's largely flying 30Kls to POI with a couple of pirates in. Only had one good fight. Thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and try it, but it's terrible.

There are no Combat Zones, or Resource Extraction Sites of any kind in this system. A standard Nav Beacon is as juicy as it gets. 0/10 would not massacre here again.
What's your rep with the faction offering the mission, what's your combat ranking, and what was the rank of the mission? All have substantial impact on the reward.

Elite rank mission, Allied rep and Elite combat rank, on a nonwing pirate mission should be paying 40m for 30 kills.

That's what I've experienced elsewhere, but it's a new system to me, so my local rep is fairly neutral. I was going to see if it would chain on to better rewards, but I don't think we'll be back any time soon. I'm Deadly, not sure what the rank on the missions were, the payout at this point isn't what's confusing, it's how they're supposed to work with these highlighted planets.

Waring systems is definitely where I'm seeing the best return, pick up massacre missions and rinse the CZs.

Well I tried to report it to FD through the issue tracker, but the form won't submit after filling everything in. sigh.

Usually when I accept one of those missions, the ships belonging to the faction that I'm supposed to attack are...
a) flying around the target system. This is terrible because you have to chase them down one by one, interdict them, and destroy them.
b) to be found in a RES,etc., but you already stated that there isn't one in the system.
c) found at a "mission target" site (or similarly named) if you scan the Nav beacon or FSS the system. (I prefer the latter because I find it to be much quicker in most cases than taking the time to visit and scan the nav beacon. Finding that one little orange circle - the mission target - in the FSS is usually pretty quick.)

The planetary site that's flagged is bogus. They're not going to be there. I think you should simply dump this mission and perhaps try another one (elsewhere as you already suggested).
It's not worth agonizing over this one any longer and certainly not worth awaiting a ticket response, imo (but I don't know if there are details that matter to you). 40 pirates is a heck of a lot!

I guess it's too late by now, but I guess I'd reiterate my question about the mission description body was; was it actually that body, or did the mission description say something like "Trade lanes between <that body> and some other body".

I'd also add; warring systems definitely aren't the best return. I don't really know what's going on in your case here (the fact the payout is so low is a bit of a red flag for a whole bunch of reasons, tbh, but I won't discuss them here unless you're interested).

Typically the comparison is
CZ Massacre: Can't stack them, biggest payout is 40-50m for up to 90 targets, and those targets will be not necessarily tough, but massive bullet sponges, so the time-to-kill is very slow.

Pirate Massacre: Can cross-faction-stack them, biggest payout is 40m for 30 kills, and those targets will be much weaker than CZ targets, especially if you cross-stack lower rank massacres on top of the bigger paying ones.

A fairly average cross-stack will see you with about 100m credits rewarded for just 30 kills, so that's a 12:1 kill/payout ratio, assuming you can kill either target as quickly. Of course, you'd respond to this with your experience here (that you can't even find target USS), which as mentioned, either there's some info we're missing, or you've hit a pretty obscure bug which rarely happens.

Oh yeah, I did check the lanes and what not, nothing like that. I tried both the nav beacon approach and the FSS approach. Each time, I tend to get one or two planets lit up, and one or two POIs a looooooong way away from any planets. Initially I thought I might have to trudge around on the surface on the planet, but my last attempt through gave me an atmospheric planet so clearly not the case. I'm sure there is a mechanic here, but like a lot of things Elite and to the constant grief of some of my friends who hate the game, it's just not clear and ends up wasting time trying to figure out what is going on.

You're absolutely right about CZ sponges, although low security is pretty good. The problem with the pirate missions is time between POIs and what not, you can churn out CZ kills, whereas I'm finding that pirate missions you're getting stuff like this, where you have to trek between POIs. I guess that's mostly about finding a sweet spot to work in where there is a CNB nearby that you can go pillaging.

Agent Dash, your mission should you choose to accept it is as follows.......

1. Infiltrate FDEV disguised as a bread roll
2. Find out why FDEV are so slow in doing their job?
3. Abduct the one known as Braben and replace him with a cheese and cress sandwich (nobody will be able to tell the difference).
4. Extract using the most underused facility in the building. Yes, the salad bar.

Should you fail or get captured, we have provided a suicide kit that consists of the following:

A. Two paperclips
B. One copy of E.T on Atari
C. A chess board with thirty missing pieces

Good luck agent, your country is counting on you, what what
