where's the tractor beam?

Are you thinking of the Dyson brand star vacuum? Apparently it uses patented cyclone technology to suck? ;)

I don't see why some sort of targeted electromagnetic force couldn't be used in situations where the drives of the ship being targeted are not functioning, or on a ship that's not currently engaging its thrusters.

I mean, you could still activate it on a ship while its thrusters are engaged, but the electromagnetic force should be much weaker than any ship's engines, so at most it may shave a couple points off their speed, or some other very small percentage.

I remember folks saying that about landing on planets :D

Except landing on planets was always part of the game development plans and people who were saying it's never going to happen were just being negative, but there are some things that were never on the game development plans and why would FDEV add more to those plans when the existing ones still have years to go?

Agreed with OP! Having a more technological and less nonsensical way of stopping ships other than bumping or inertia transfer weapons would be a good addition to piracy gameplay. Either a guardian tether beam, or a attaching cable launched either with a hook or with a melting soft-headed missile. A new limpet controller module with the purpose of zeroing the target's velocity vector would also be more than welcome! Not to mention the interesting and fun uses of such modules that would be explored by the community.

However, this still is but one of the aspects of piracy needing a revamp. The spawning of ships with valuables deserves a review after the mining nerf; LTDs are now worth much less and with that went down the drain the pirate's career profits. NPC ships don't seem to spawn carrying the more valuable minerals (Benitoite, Musgravite, Serendibite, etc)

I like this idea a lot. It does make sense to have some kind of either grappling hook, Tow Limpet or a tractor beam. This actually makes even more sense if you think that each could be fitted onto a ship and crafted as either a module or specialized limpet or hard point.

In fact, let's expand on the idea for a moment. Let's say for example, the Devs add into the story line the notion of ship salvage. I don't necessarily mean the current spate of ships that one can get at a shipyard but let's make it more interesting. Perhaps run salvage missions recovering relics or Thargoid ships. In fact a whole new branch of lore can be added to the game. Also, this would be perfect for a wing mission if let's say the salvage operation was something much larger where groups of pilots had to work together.

Another thought would be to attach frameshift limpets that could be slaved to the original commander and flown back to a shipyard. Imagine the possibilities of Easter egg hunts in space where the payoff is a large ship with lots of salvage booty such as Thargoid, Guardian or even perhaps engineered devices.

I can see endless possibilities of how such a concept could expand the game in many different dimensions.

Now if only this were true of cargo canisters as well, targets drifting off wouldn't be such a problem.
About them it's partly true, try to hit some and they'll start to move erratically, but then somehow they slow, wich is not very strict to physic laws.
