I am relatively new to trading and I was wondering which powerplay faction would be best to join to get the best trading in.

Definitely Mahon. You get a bonus (up to +25% if Mahon is in 1st place, like now) for trading in Mahon exploited/control systems so long as you are above rating 2, and at higher amounts of trading, it can be quite a bit of coin. His rating 5 bonus is a boost to rare trading income, but it's definitely not worth the effort. The rating 2 bonus, however, is definitely a worthwhile boon for traders.
You are more then likely going to be attacked by other powers.
Less downsides to joining one vs not
It comes with greater risk of being attacked but also gives a new depth to the game.
You're unlikely to be attacked because of your Powerplay pledge, unless you're undertaking Powerplay activities (eg: undermining opposing powers) There really aren't that many downsides to pledging but there are lots of perks. Powerplay gets an awful rep on here but you'll get a lot more out of the game, especially if you join one of the communities. That's my experience at least, altough that may be because I joined Utopia
