Which Flight system is king????

Hi all.

When i finall get the game and start playing i will be using one of the Saitek systems. Which is the better system for Elite and are they compatible with ED. I going to have either the Saitek X52 Pro or the Plain X52.

Any comments would be gratfully recieved.

Quincey.

I'd go for the Pro.

Other peeps will suggest you go to something a bit higher-end.

I'm perfectly happy with mine, but to each their own. You may find them in short supply though.

Have both x52 and x52 pro here. The pro is mine and im keeping it, the x52 belongs to a friend. Have had a good look and feel of both in comparison and apart from a few bits of metal on the pro they are pretty much identical. I think the hat switches on the stick are better on the standard but thats a matter of taste.

I know the pro has a few extra bells and whistles but they feel very very similar, maybe the pro is a little stiffer with its extra spring but there isnt much in it.

They are pretty rare right now so probably get which ever one you can find.

thrustmaster warthog hotas is probably the best one you can get when it comes to accuracy and durability , however it is quite expensive.

main differences between pro and regular are dual magnetic hall sensors which should make x52pro more precise, dual spring centering mechanism, which provides incremental stiffness when you move joystick away from centre, metal shaft and centering mechanism as well as few other metal parts which should give it more durability and customizable leds/lcd display

All of this is accurate apart from the x52 also has a metal shaft. The parts that are metal on the pro are the "cup" that the spring sits on, the round part that the cup sits on. The only other parts that are metal are the first hat switch (pretty nice actually), the mode selector on the right of the stick and the 3 toggle switches on the base of the stick have pretty gnurled metal parts.

Not used the 52 vanilla in anger yet so cant comment on the difference that the dual hal sensors make in the pro but there is a medium difficulty mod that you can do that increases the sensitivity (supposedly) and reduces the deadzone of the standard x52. Will be trying out the x52 on monday night when I deliver it to its new owner so if there is a marked difference I will report back.

CH Products if you want something well made, practically designed and will last a decade.

well, my X52 pro did last for a very long time now...and that's not only a good thing *g*
In fact it is so old, it still has the "phantom key press" problem ;)

Edit: if you plan to get a X52 second hand (pro or not pro), be sure it was build after 2011...

+1 to this .

I bought a new CH HOTAS + Pedal setup... not because my old one was bad, but because my new computer doesn't support the plug ins for the old HOTAS. the old one is as snappy and accurate Today as it was when I unboxed it 12 years ago. and with the exception of USB plugs and un-faded plastics.. the New HOTAS is identical to the old. don't fix what isn't broken, and the CH-HOTAS was properly designed 20 years ago.. its still proper today, just no flashy lights.

Not to mention that they're extremely programmable. Once you learn the scripting language, you can add all sorts if advanced controls and functionality that really enrich the game.

Right now, the Premium Beta build broke that advanced functionality, but they're still very good in DX mode. But it's ticketed, and currently under investigation by FD, so I'm sure it'll be fixed soon. :)

I got myself the Saitek X55 Rhino they work very well. Very happy, lots to configure.

I don't there is much difference between sicks. Systems with more controls (Saitek X55s and TM Whathogs) should make things easier than sytems with less HATs and switches (X52s/X52 Pros).

One thing I kept in mind while make my choice was where I wanted to go. I'm really looking forward to trying out the Oculus Rift at LaveCon in a few weeks time. If they really work for me than I'll get a pair when they release the commercial version (I hope Q4 this year; in time for Christmas). So I wanted to have enough controls and switches that I would need to use the keyboard.

Small but important update.

Just dug out my friends x52 to compare with my x52 pro again and there is a massive difference in the range of movement between the 2 sticks. The pro has a far greater range of movement than the standard. Also the return to centre on the pro is much more precise on the pro.

I would now say that the pro is worth the extra cost.

Since this isn't a flight sim:

Logitech G13 keyboard, mainly because of that mini stick for lateral thrust. Otherwise a standard WSAD setup for thrust and roll.

Corsair M90 gaming mouse for yaw/pitch targeting and other important stuff. Lots of thumb buttons.

I'm now on a conventional M&K setup and I've got lateral thrust mapped on A/D and two buttons on a mouse. Moving that to a left thumb stick should really help.
