Varati (pretty close to bubble), Takurua (mid-range), or Sothis (quite far). All three have large-pad stations. Not sure about allegiance of those systems, sorry, but doing the missions from there resulted in many rank-up opportunities with the Feds for me. Not that I pay any attention to them

For smuggling missions, look for a skull with an arrow, but be advised that they're very rare and require high-ish trade rank. Seen payouts from 1M (rare), through 4M (rarer), all the way to 9M (act of god).

Just as an FYI, Varati is independent.
I do these long range missions most weekend i do 2 a day, as i have found them lasting 3-4 hours. I have a Python armed to the teeth, extra fuel tank (To get through the band of non scoop-able stars), a fuel scoop, and 176 cargo space. For this loadout i go to Takurua and stack missions that go to the same system and station. Most i have had to one station is 18. To get more mission i sell all my Bio and Hyd Fuel at Takurua to give me more cargo space and of course more missions. I usually end up with about 13-16 stops and well over a 100 missions. i average these out to be around 800k (you do the maths, but if it helps i earn approx 80 million for about 4 hours work (Hour stacking missions and 3 hours delivering). Remember you have to find a station to buy the Bio and Hyd Fuel you sold back at Takurua to complete the missions, so some careful planning is needed. I have a list of system that sell these so can jump into one of these to replenish.
For the shorter time i take my 84 cargo ASP to Robigo and just take smuggling missions (only Over 3 million each) and i usually end up with about 10 of these missions (Harder to sell the cargo as it vary's so much from Narcotics/Slaves etc etc) These average out at about 3mil per mission (Have had an 8 million for 6 slaves just this weekend, but loads of 3 mill and 5 mill missions).
This route only takes me about 2 hours to deliver and an hour stacking, so as our American friends would say, "You do The Math". This run attracts LOADS of interdiction's which i just run, unless they in my destination system to collect the bounty and to stop the repeated interdiction's by the same NPC. Had to do this in Solo lately as the jump speed in Open is rubbish and making this many jumps with a sloooooow jump time would push the overall time past the 5-6 hour mark.
