Which IPD should I trust?

Don’t trust anyone, it could be a trap.

...Alternatively drop into a glasses shop and they will measure for you. Or even get a friend to measure the distance. That’s all the shop does. I mean, you know.

My Doctor says my IPD is 74.1, but I just measured it at 69? Which should I trust? Did my head shrink?!

Yes, head shrink is a known side effect of prolonged wearing of goggles that are held in place with springs and elastic bands. Give VR a rest for a few days and your head should return to its normal size. [yesnod]

It's funny, I asked my eye doc for my IPD and she wouldn't provide it. I later realized it's because they don't want me grabbing my prescription from them and going elsewhere for glasses. I'll be finding a new doc.

The General here probably has an IPD of 74....

Any optician (the person who fits your glasses) will gladly measure your IPD, as part of fitting your glasses.

As to the OP, you need to be looking straight ahead and it's measured from the center of your pupils.

Just discovered the IPD sensor on my Rift has stopped registering. Do we know if ED takes the IPD reading into account, as it might explain some of the odd issues I have with 'skybox' (I use that term very loosely) stars are showing a lot of blue shadowing.

That sounds like chromatic aberration, which can be affected by an improperly set IPD.

Oh it's definitely CA, but there are 2 annoying things about it; One, it shouldn't really show in the centre of your view, and two, I don't get it as much if I use a faceplate designed to accomodate glasses - clearly the slight difference in distance is countering the IPD issue.

So yes, while the physical IPD is correct (I know this because the Rift's maximum IPD setting is 70mm - which coincidentally is exactly what mine is!), the fact the setting isn't being relayed to the software is likely causing things to be drawn incorrectly.

Currently, Oculus tech support are 'thinking' about what to do about it...

That sounds bad. Any half decent optician should give you a card or something like that with all your proscription details on after you have had an eye test. So yes, I would definitely find a new one.

Got a replacement Rift from the guys at Oculus yesterday to replace the issue I mentioned earlier. Difference is quite obvious - the lens placement is pointless if the IPD isn't being sent to the software, as everything looks 'right' now.

Oh, and they have changed the interface foam.. it's lush now - no more thin strip of rubber, this is a fully covered soft foam cushioning.. it's glorious!

That sounds sketchy to me. Your optometrist should be legally obligated to provide your entire prescription to you if you ask for it. I recently asked for mine to order some cheap glasses from zenni.com to put into some 3d-printed rift inserts. They were happy to provide it and send me over a .pdf

I also got my IPD measured in their store for free as well. The assistant used a machine to do it.
