So, just back from the Launch party and after listening to CMDR Braben I have a simple question (@'Eranin' and as promised!):

is it, and as I have always seemingly mistakenly thought it to be, "Co-bra"?

or is it, and as The Creator himself speaks, "Cob-ra"?

Fellow CMDRs, please enlighten me.

Sounds like an accent issue or a speech impediment.

According to both Oxford and Webster, ir's "Co-bra"

To be clear I am in no way mocking anyone's way of pronouncing Cobra, just genuinely interested in the right answer from an Elite and Elite lore perspective.

That would have to be the official one then ..

Depends where you come from. IPA confuses me but I think it's closer to cob-ra in Spanish and Portuguese. Usually co-bra in English.

It's a Portugese word, ain't it? You'd need a Portugese speaker - but I reckon it's Cob-ra.
That's how I recall it being pronounced in India - but that's way back, so my memory is hazy.

Mine sounds like "Coe-bra". I'm still more messed up to find out that "orientate" is a real word though. It sounds... unnatural to me.

Co-bra to me.

I think the pronunciation is entirely due to where in the world you are. English vs American English can be worlds apart. Case in point being how David Braben pronounced 'Beta': He said 'Bee-ta' whereas a lot of people I know and myself included say 'Bey-ta'

Potayto - Potahto ;)

I'd consult the highest authority on all things Cobra:
