Which is more iconical for India, gaurs or chitals?

The truth is that the animals of India are incredible, and if they were to bring in a pack of India, which animal would have more chances to come out, the chital or the gaur?

needs more bird
I guess I would go with a painted stork or a bar headed goose. When I organized my wishlist, I made 22 packs, some of which had more than one bird.

What would you guys choose for the Indian subcontinent?

Animal Pack
1. Blackbuck
2. Sloth Bear
3. Fishing Cat (Could also be the caracal)
4. Chital deer (could be replaced by gaur or nilgai)
5. Honey badger
6. Lion tailed macaque (could also be the hanuman langur)
7. Indian mongoose
8. Indian cobra

Striped hyena, indian lion, mugger crocodile are possible too. Maybe getting a birds isntead of that many carnivores like a painted stork, which would be nice, although i want the hornbill if we get flying birds.

I think the gaur is more recognizable. Also, the chital is way too similar to the European fallow deer, so I'd be against its inclusion.

1) Indian Crested Porcupine
2) Sloth Bear
3) Gaur
4) Blackbuck
5) Nilgai or Markhor depending how you define the Pack
6) Lion-Tailed Macaque
7) Bar-Headed Goose
8) Indian or King Cobra

Didn't include a Muntjac because I think Reeve's Muntjac of East Asia is the more iconic zoo species over Indian.

Frankly, I would be disappointed with either inclusion. You could certainly argue that gaur would have been a better inclusion that the water buffalo, but it's too late to affect that change now. I would have preferred the guar since its an actual wild species. All water buffaloes in zoos are the domestic species Bubalus bubalis. The gaur is not well known and it could have helped raised awareness for the species. But an obscure species certainly cannot be classified as iconic. Neither is it endemic to India nor any more strongly associated with India than Southeast Asia. I also don't think that another spotted deer species would fill any missing niche in the game at this time.

An Indian ungulate is definitely missing from the game. But the obvious question is which of the two iconic Indian species: nilgai or blackbuck? There are plenty of other iconic Indian species that would be assets to the game. We need an Indian primate: lion-tailed macaque vs. rhesus macaque vs. gray langur?

If we were ever to get birds, there would be many iconic Indian birds to choose from: Indian vulture vs. white-rumped vulture, Sarus crane, Great Indian Hornbill, Greater Adjutant Stork, Ringneck parakeet, or Himalayan monal.

Honestly, I'd much rather get a muntjac than a blackbuck, nilgai, gaur or even Chital, though I'd still be happy to see any of them finding their way into the game.
They fit a niche we don't really have (small deer for the tropical biome), and are quite versatile.

That's true and i like muntjacs as well, but i like the blackbuck more. Fortunally we have a really good mod of it :)

I want a muntjac more than the other ungulates, but I'd be fine with a different variety. I think the blackbuck represents India better for this pack though.

I would most definitely prefer gaur! Both would be good but the gaur is such an iconic Indian animal and is one of the largest land mammals.

Since we already have a spotted deer, I think chital wouldn't be preferred over gaur. But again you can't think of an india pack without chital or sambar so I don't know.

1) Indian Crested Porcupine
2) Sloth Bear
3) Gaur
4) Blackbuck
5) Nilgai or Markhor depending how you define the Pack
6) Lion-Tailed Macaque
7) Bar-Headed Goose
8) Indian or King Cobra

Really solid and well balanced pack. I also like the emphasis on commonality in zoos.

The only difference I would make is include a small cat like fishing or pallas's cat, even though these two (especially pallas) are somewhat of an outlier for the indian subcontinent. Same can be said about the markhor, so it I think it is ok to include them. If flying birds were allowed I would also want the hornbill.
  • Indian crested porcupine (most common zoo porcupine, more than twice representation than african crested so an india pack is a golden opportunity for crested porcupines)
  • Sloth bear (can't think of an india pack without one)
  • Fishing cat
  • Gaur
  • Blackbuck (again a must have for india)
  • Lion-tail macaque (or grey langur)
  • Bar-headed goose (or painted stork)
  • Indian cobra (E) (prefer this one over king because of the building pieces in the game, otherwise they are similarly common in zoos)

I would have chosen the gaur before we got the wild water buffalo, but now I would pick the chital as our first Asian deer.

  1. Chital / Muntjac
  2. Blackbuck
  3. Nilgai
  4. Lion tailed macaque
  5. Grey langur
  6. Indian giant squirrel
  7. Honeybadger / Indian crested porcupine
  8. Cobra
Added 2 more iconic Indian ungulates, 2 iconic Indian monkeys, the first super colorful squirrel, a honeybadger or porcupine that also helps for the Middle East representation, and of course the Cobra. With these, India is set. Though to be fair, I would choose the Muntjac over the chital for Asian deer representation 😁

No sloth bear, don't need another black bear. If we didn't have the amur leopard I would have gone with the Indian leopard for the predator pick, but then again, India already has its large cat predator in the Bengal tiger.

Between the two I’d prefer the gaur, but it’s a weak preference. The chital is probably more "iconic", at least from my perspective. Like most people I’d take the blackbuck and nilgai first. Honestly one of the reasons I’m hoping (but not expecting) support extends through 2023 is so that we can get an Indian Animal Pack that doesn’t end up out-prioritizing other lacking areas. I came up with a list recently and it probably looked something like this:
  • Blackbuck
  • Nilgai
  • Zebu
  • Fishing cat
  • Lion-tailed macaque
  • Sloth bear
  • viverrid species, gray langur, or porcupine (mostly dependent on what we get in other packs - if this is the only slot for a porcupine, it takes top priority; if we don’t get roughly one monkey per pack from here on out, then I’d take the langur; otherwise just gimme a palm civet)

Blackbuck and Sloth bear are most iconic for india in my opinion plus any monkey like lion tailed macaque or gray langur.

I really think we really need at least one Indian monkey.

Plus there is a small chance we can expect Gaur since we received water buffalo and chital since we already got fallow deer. But who knows.
