Which is the ship you can't keep your hands off?

From spending some time on the forum, I see a lot of people aspiring to own big ships and trying to get there as fast as possible. For many it looks to be one of the main goals in game. Are they fun though?

By that I mean, even though CMDRs own them do they regularly get stored or mothballed for other ships that are interesting or more enjoyable to fly. Quite recently I've noticed quite a few Cmdr's who I normally see all the time in big ships, now in smaller ones and flying them very well I should add.

So are the big ships fun or are they just functional (as in "I own an Anaconda or a Cutter because it has lots of cargo space").

Alternatively is your real love a smaller ship? If so what is it and why do you keep going back to it?

It might give newer players an alternative aspiration so they don't race headlong for the big three and miss out on a gem or two along the way.

I've never sat in one of the Big 3, but I have messed with some of the other large ships. They have their uses, and TBH I'll always have an Orca kicking around.

But I always look forward to time in a Diamondback or Asp, either S or X variant. The flight characteristics, interior aesthetics & noises all appeal to me.

I have the money, but none of the big three appeal to me. I like flying around with a rebuy cost that's a rounding error compared to what I have in the bank. Promotes fun and recklessness.

The personal favorites I come back to are the iCourier (fast and survivable) and the DBS (maneuverability and I like the DB cockpit). I'll also often bring out the FAS or FDS when I'm in the mood to just run around throwing firepower at other ships.

Honorable mention to the Dolphin. Handles real nice, but I dislike the cockpit.

Any of the iShip's.
I love the sleek, sexy, curves and would love many more. :D

Sleek *is* sexy.

I love the Viper IV, I adore the Imperial Courier and I really like the Python. I have 450mil credits and I'm not sure if I even want an Anaconda.

The Asp X - no matter what other ship I have and fly, I often get back into that. Mainly because now it has been engineered to about 40ly FSD jump while fully kitted for combat when necessary, and able to boost away at way over 400 boost speed for encounters where I feel I don't have the edge. I can take most passenger or cargo missions - nice lucrative ones! Passenger tourist missions to specific sites and back usually take so few jumps that I can do 3 or 4 an hour if I wish (and at well above 1mil per mission it's not bad paying and I get to see lots of tourist sites I wouldn't normally visit)!

It can carry enough cargo in single hops to be able to take several missions at once and do a 'circuit'!

If I was to strip it as an explorer ship (which I will probably do soon) it should get some way over 50ly per jump I think

I have an Anaconda that is currently set up for mining, but keeps all it's combat weapons and SLF, so I can mine in a HAZRES quite 'comfortably', usually ending up with a full cargo hold and a string of bounties.

I also have an Orca engineered for about 34ly's and can also handle itself in a fight - the beauty of this ship is that with engineered thrusters it pretty much goes where you point it, boosts well in excess of 500, hardly any 'side slide' that you get with the Anaconda, and even the Asp X (even with engineered thrusters), and has very good shields too! Ideal for the occasional First Class and Luxury passenger run just for a change. Still damn good against any NPC pirate interdictions too! I've collected more than a few bounties with it! I even tried it as a mining ship once just for the fun of it! Yes, it worked ok ...

However, this has reminded me I have a Vulture sitting somewhere out on the edge of the bubble near a good HAZRES so maybe I will go over and give that a spin again!

Edited to add: How could I forget the Python? Probably because I just don't seem to go out and about in it now. I don't really know why, it was my 'go to' favourite ship for a long time, has been well engineered (although more could still be done), reasonable jump range, can do passenger and cargo missions mixed together if I wish, got a good lot of firepower, and can land at outposts too! (now I think about it I do miss those, having been mainly in the Anaconda and Orca recently!)

My guilty pleasure is the iCourier. I love that ship to bits, no matter how many billions I have, it's THE ship to go to when I just need a little bit of fun.

I also quite enjoy doing missions and planetary jobs in Keelback. She and the AspS are the underdogs of Elite, yet in my eyes completely don't deserve it. And it kind of bugs me, because as they don't have big enough fanbase, they don't have any paintjobs and other liveries. :(

I own a Cutter and an Anaconda.

I've only had the Cutter for maybe 6-7 weeks and it's configured for bulk trade at the moment. No weapons at all because I won't be trying to fight in it, it's all about evade and escape if interdicted. I am going to build a second more general purpose one at some point but I can't see it ever becoming a daily drive, partly because of the limitations on where I can dock it and partly because I prefer something more agile for general use.

The Anaconda has spent 99% of its life fitted out specifically as an explorer. I've never actually flown it around the bubble for day-to-day stuff; the only time I've ever flown it in something other than full exploration rig was the first CG to Jaques to repair the station after its mis-jump when I used the Anaconda to ferry 320 tons of supplies out there and even then I basically just stripped out most of the internals and replaced them with cargo racks - the core modules were unchanged from my exploration build which was the entire point because I wanted the jump range.

I've spent probably 75% of my time in the game flying either an Asp or a Python and I don't see that changing any time soon.

For pure combat ships, the most fun is still my Vulture with twin class 3 plasma accelerators.

My guilty pleasure is the iCourier. I love that ship to bits, no matter how many billions I have, it's THE ship to go to when I just need a little bit of fun.

And yes, for a ship to just fly without any particular focus on tasks, the Courier is and probably always will be my favourite.

Cutter for Hauling, Python for Combat*, Asp X for travelling around.

*It's also technically my missioning & mining ship but I very rarely do much of either.

I have all 3 of the big ships, but the Anaconda is just languishing at a forgotten station. I generally go back to one of my Asp-Xs or Python. Both are capable ships for most any task.

If I need some ready cash, I can just grab my trade Cutter for an hour or so.

Corvette for npc stomping in a HazRes, Python for everything else except exploring, then it's the AspX.

I have 24 ships though and I actually like them all, I just like spaceships in general :D

To me the fun is in flying the ships, and faster/more agile ships are just more fun. With a conda you are more a captain than pilot, IMHO. A light-weight modded Viper mk3 is simply way cooler to fly than a corvette.

Keelback and Asp Scout, soon to be all over the Krait like jam on toast

Yeah, gimme more small ships! Gimme gimme!

I use a lot of ships and have no intention of selling them. Cobra3 is one I always come back to and also the Viper 3.

There are only 3 ships I could never sell. Cobra mkIII, AspX and Clipper. Also have a Python that I use every now and then (it lacks soul) and a Courier and Cutter, but they are mothballed.
