Black Friday helped me take the plunge. I'll be installing my new HTC Vive shortly.

While waiting I started wondering. Which is the most used VR headset for Elite: Dangerous?

Please share which is your preferred VR headset for E: D, and if you have specific reasons please share them also. :)

At this point I think you will be good with either one. When I pre-ordered the Rift, I had already been using a DK2 for some time and loved it. I didn't get caught up in the Elite supports Vive scare when people were convinved CV1 wouildn't be suported because Frontier had some secret exclusivity agreem, ent with Vive. I wanted ASW. I only use or plan to use my HMD for seated experiences like Elite, DCS and iRacing so had no need for the ability to walk around although I later learn that CV1 can do that as well. I have no need for the hand sticks so I won't be buying the Oculus ones. I think the CV1 was a cheaper and better buy for my needs.

Also to consider is that most games made for Vive can be played with the CV1 but the reverse hasn't always been true for Vive to do CV1 exclusives. Not sure but hopeful they changed that for everyone's sake.

Bit of a loaded question, but I chose the Rift. Superior industrial design, I felt it was more comfortable (on my head), and the firmware is more advanced.

At launch, Vive didn't have reprojection at all, Rift had ATW fully implemented. Now there's ASW as well, and while it has its issues, it is clear Oculus is ahead of the team behind Vive's firmware.

However, Vive has arguably better tracking over a larger distance, and better colour representation than the Rift.

So really, pick your poison... they both have issues and great benefits.

Think this poll will mostly show what kind of VR set you got, unless you are not happy with it.

I choose Oculus Rift because: 1. allot cheaper for me. 2. Works without fuzz with ED. 3. From reviews it might have a touch better image, might be because of slightly less FOV. 4. Comfort - all agree it is real easy taking on/off and well balanced (weights less also). 5. Includes decent headphones that are attached (no fiddling with earplugs).

As long as you are not doing full room scale I just don't see the extra cost of the Vive getting me anything making it worth it.

In the end both are good but it is the next gen that will really shine :)

I have both. Vive is my preferred right now, even canceled my Oculus touch order. The color banding just drives me nuts right now. With async reprojection added to Steam VR performance wise they are very close now. Colors are just more vibrant on the Vive and space looks much nicer I think. You have a few more shimmery edges but SMAA + 1.5 HMD gets rid of most of them.

I went with other, im using the hdk 2 with osvr and at the price and compatibility it has (use any controllers with it etc) it has really impressed me.

I havent tried a rift or vive but it would take a lot for me to consider them £100+ better than the hdk 2.

+1. I had both. First I had Vive and later on Oculus. Oculus went back after 2 weeks due to color banding, lower contrast and generally lower immersion and higher artifacting. As it stands now Vive's software (drivers) are almost on par with Oculus, but Vive's hardware is just better to Oculus. In my opinion - Oculus has nice dress, but once you look under it you wish you went for Vive, which might dress in Primark clothe, but is gorgeous once you look under the hood ;) .

I would use the Sony VR Headset, if it only would work with PCs. I'd prefer true room scale tracking with the PSVR Headset. Hope to see some more choice soon. We are either stuck with bad headsets or bad tracking and compatibility.

Aye what I was going to say.

Must admit it's interesting hearing from people who have actually tried both.

I know CV1 was previously the one to go for, I had wondered how they compared now what with all the recent Vive improvements, both in game and with the drivers.

FWIW I am a Vive owner, not tried an Oculus so I don't really think I am qualified to vote.

Honestly they both have their issues and benefits and these days there isn't much to pick between them for Elite at least, for anything else I'm Vive all the way.

Agreed, although ... don't know about anyone else but I did a fair amount of research into which one to get so my choice (Oculus) was an informed one (which I'm entirely happy with by the way).

Went Oculus because (in no particular order):

a) I'd followed it's development for a long time and wanted to support it (despite facebook's buyout)
b) don't have the space where my computer is to take advantage of roomscale
c) was primarily buying it for Elite and most reviews seemed to suggest that the Oculus just had the edge in terms of graphics quality (this was back when there was some kind of issue on the Vive re: Elite graphics - has that been resolved now?)
d) liked the fact that it had (really good) builtin headphones which made it easier to put on and take off
e) found it lighter and more comfortable
f) it just seemed like a more refined product with a slightly better build quality

I'm a full-time wheelchair user, and at the start it seemed that the Oculus Rift was the more 'sitting down' experience. When I heard that ED was supported, my mind was maked up.

Of course, the fact that Vive had had controllers from the off, is probably their were more 'walking around' demo's on show, and I reckon this probably cost Oculus a few sales of the Rift, too. Will I get thee Oculus Touch controllers? We'll see.

The Rift has been around a lot longer than the Vive so it's not unexpected. Given the pace the Vive has caught up, I'd put money on any gap in future development closing rapidly.

You are correct though. They are both excellent. I have a FOVE coming soon as well.

You have been around these forums long enough that you already know how people feel about and why they purchased their respective HMD's so I fail to see the point in your exercise unless you are second guessing yourself. Definitely a loaded question. You will be fine with your purchase and if not you can always send it back. As to whether there are more Rift or Vive users playing Ed. who cares. By the time we buy our second gen VR it may well be neither of these so this is all moot, IMO

Oh and welcome to VR

Nice to see so many VR users on this forum. :)

I guess I should have added a poll for those who have both (or several) HMDs, as I know some have, and commanders seem to have different reasons for choosing a specific HMD for Elite: Dangerous.

I think Black Friday gave a boost in HMD sales in general, and I hope Christmas will see a price drop and a surge in sales, adding to this amazing platform. A few years from now we'll all be boosting about stations in ultra high definition with wireless HMDs. :)

Just got my vive installed from black friday deal and damn it is awesome. Have been trying to play with a hotas but it just was not cutting it until i slapped that bad boy on my face then for some reason it just flowed better. And the ships, oh man the scale of these ships is incredible. Worth every dime.
