Fiction Which of the old fiction is canon?

I have searched the forums and not found an answer to this, so apologies if it is there and I am just not great at searching.

I was wondering which, if any, of the old fiction is considered Elite canon?

By old fiction I mean, "The Dark Wheel" from Elite, "Stories of Life on the Frontier" from Frontier and "Further Stories of Life on the Frontier" from Frontier: First Encounters.

Or, as I suspect, they all considered obsolete compared to the new fiction being written for Elite: Dangerous?

The reason I ask is that I am intrigued by story arcs from the new fiction being implemented in game. Does this also mean that old fiction story arcs considered canon will also be implemented? I would love to visit the Tionisla Graveyard!

Thanks for reading.

All of the fiction you listed is at least a little bit canon. However there are some things that don't quite fit in the new game. The Dark Wheel implies anti-gravity for instance, which just doesn't exist. But things like Tionisla are likely to be in the new game, as well as items like remlocks. As for the Dark Wheel itself... well, that's a mystery ;)

The "Further Stories" tales were a bit of a mixed bag and less relevant to the new game. "Stories", which came with Frontier, is much more in line with the modern style.

The details from the Frontier Gazetteer are all pretty good too.

As Darren says, much of the original story work is being re-used, but I would go so far to say none of what has gone before can be thought of as 100% canon at this point. It would be impossible to accommodate as various parts conflict with others.

Many of the famous planets will be there, but I don't believe all are guaranteed. Some history has been revised.

Cheers,

Drew.

Allen Stroud (one of the fiction authors) recently mentioned a good example of how much work has been done to incorporate the old fiction: the latest "peek of the week" image is a machine created by Achilles Robotics, whose prior canonical existence consists of a single entry buried deep in the Frontier: First Encounters journals.

I can confirm that a LOT of work has gone into including stuff from the old fiction. Events and other stuff from Elite through to FFE is being included.

That's about all I can say. Hold fire, though, only three or four months to go until you'll be getting a lot of books to read. :)

Thanks to all of you for replying.

I'm really pleased about the 'unifying' of the fiction, for want of a better term. It sounds like a huge amount of work has gone into it, so thanks to Michael Brookes and anyone else who's had a hand in this.

Now, the only remaining problem is how to decide on the split of my free time between flying and reading...!

Get the audio books and you can do both simultaneously!

Division of time between playing and reading will definitely be a challenge - at least for the start. It will be interesting to see which activity wins, although I hope they will rather complement each other.

I have spent much more time on the Fantastic kickstarter and in these pages than playing the game. Which is daft, but there we go.

A lot of the stuff in the books is still canon but some of it has changed. Obviously, mentions of the 'Eight Galaxies' in the likes of 'The Dark Wheel' and 'Imprint' will have to be edited along with some of the little things like Anti-Gravity and you being able to mount weapons to the aft and sides of your ships. ;)

That's one of the fun things about all this, though, we get to see the universe evolve and solidify in a way that it hasn't for a long time. With Elite: Dangerous we finally get to see all the little things from Elite and from the sequels get put together into a (hopefully) cohesive whole.

Having been thumbing through the journals to kill time, I happened to notice a bit of old fiction I suspect will no longer be canon.

From a story about a gang of "terrarists" (people that steal bits of land):

FFE Journals said:
a number of important Federal civic monuments have been mysteriously removed, one of which is the ancient Trade Centre Tower from Old NewYork

Yeah, I think that would be a bit edited, at least. Though, I have to wonder how big a ship they'd have to have to snag a building? Certainly nothing we'll be able to fly. ;)

I was looking for this too, not having read any elite book. It was a long time since I played Frontier so I wanted to freshen up. The whole elite universe seems to be a bit of a mess =)

The best wiki for background info seems to be wiki.alioth.net, at least it had info on what the hell the alliance vs federation again was :D

The new elite-dangerous.wikia.com is missing a lot of background info. I hope Frontier Development works on putting more info out there on the background of the core planets, factions, ships, equipment. The elite universe needs a bit more flashy infographics about the cool stuff.

Thanks for this link: dream-ware.co.uk seems to contain most of the books online in good formatting with a description of what the book is about.

Mike Cook's dream-ware site is fantastic and proved very useful. :D

The artefact theft plot from FFE was a bit strange anyway. I don't think we need to dwell.

Beware of relying on that - it's a wiki for Oolite, the fan-made Elite style game. It borrows information from all of the games and tries to fuse them together, so it has things like Galcop living next to the Federation and Empire. In truth the games are sequential, and much of what was in early games is obsolete or inactive in the present universe of Elite.

The best thing for catching up on the politics is the Frontier Gazetteer of Worlds and the missions / news reports from FFE. But even there we'll have to see how things are presented in-game, and how it changes over time in the evolving galaxy shaped by player action...

Not just Oolite! We put all our EBBS fiction in there and wrote a lot of background information.

But Oolite has taken it over these days...

The problem is you can't even trust the official documentation because histories change too.
