Which Saitek X52 Joystick Should I Go For?

Hi Guys

Have a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick I'm looking to replace. The general feeling I get is the X52 is the way to go.
Question: do I go for the X52, the X52 Pro or the X52 HOTAS?
Thoughts please.

Cheers

You can't go wrong with one of the X52's. however I purchased the X52, after about 3 weeks of use the 75% throttle indent stopped working (able to push throttle to 75% but would not go past the indent). I had read about this issue prior to buying on the interweb, but not all were affected so I hoped for the best. The replacement lasted 3 days with same problem. I am now on my 3rd X52 but am waiting for my X52 pro I ordered from Frontier. I intend to return my X52 when my X52 pro arrives.

Can't offer anything else as the X52 is the only controller I have used (apart from keyboard & mouse)

I have an X52 pro, and it's great. I've used it for around 6 months without problem. I can't compare it to any other stick, as it's the only one I have. But I'm very happy with it.

Cheers, Phos.

Salute folks!

I have an X52 from original launch. Always has worked, no problems at all.. AVID FSX flyer with hundreds of hours, ex WWII ONLINE flyer (JG2 CO for anyone that may know :) ), and anything else that may take HOTAS my regular X52 has held for many many years... I don't even know when I got it to tell you the truth... sometime in the lat 90s after I was tired of my x45.... It seems that for every 5 bad stories of an X52, there are thousands of stories you never hear of that folks have had them for many many years.

Hi gm3ozj!
I have the X52 (I bought it to replace my MS Sidewinder, JUST for Elite)........
As far as I can see, the only option you can buy is the HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) here http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/x52.html
It is FAB !! (No experience with the 'Pro')

i bought a X52-Pro just for elite and its like a different game now.
worked fine out the box the drivers were a pain if i remember rightly other than that best money ive spent for elite

Running the X52 pro here for a while now.
as rudder control i use CH pedals so the twist function is locked on my X52 pro.

But overall it is a good stick. And the looks of it fits the spacey theme very well indeed.
For the money you can not go wrong imo mine is going strong still after 3 years of daily abuse ;)

Pro here, bought 9 years ago, still working, if it breaks I will get another x52pro, not the X55 or the warthog :)

Well if my X52 pro breaks, and i have the funding available, i think i would get the warthog to be honest.
It is a fantastic piece of kit. You ever had a play with it?

Only downside is that for effective use you need to bolt it down thou, heavy all metal build.
Lots of toggles and switches.

It has a major feature missing(for me anyway), no twist(yaw control) , sorry, won't even consider it :)
and because of the Yaw twist, for me it is a must to bolt down my X52 pro

Ah i see, well i use Ch pro pedals, so i have no need for the twist function.

Most people that use the Warthog use pedals, but i can understand that money and room can be limited to lots of people ;)

Well I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I feel like a complete infant. First off it took me all night last night to install windows and bootcamp with many problems along the way. This afternoon I finally got Elite installed, but couldn't complete the first tutorial because my Saitek X52 pro had absolutely no button allocated to scrolling down the menu page making it so I couldn't request docking. This I soon realised was because I hadn't set a profile yet.

This brings me to today's saga, whereby it wouldn't let me instal the profile programme because a certain driver was invalid. I went to Saiteks site and installed the latest and have basically got to a point where my entire Windows partition has stopped working and I'm running a system restore.

I have been so incredibly excited about this game, but my ineptitude is wondering whether I've made a bit of a mistake spending upward of £300 so far on a game that I've logged about three minutes flight time. :(

neither of those, most of my money is spent on my turbo hayabusa ;)

To be honest, those do not sound like issues the game has . . But user error or perhaps software error on your side.
The game recognized the X52 pro instantly as such the Ch pro pedals. No issues what so ever.
Even the saitek software was quick to install.

But running native windows software on mac's is still not as good as said or hoped to be honest.

Hey, I'm not sure if you're aware but there are only two versions of the x52, The X52 pro and simply the "x52"
They're both HOTAS sticks.

Salute folks!

As said above, trying to get windows to work on a mac, is like getting a dog and cat together.... I am sorry sir, it is not a problem with the game, it is a compatibility problem you have sir. Good luck.

The throttle detents are just simply spring loaded rubber stoppers, I've taken mine out as I don't feel any need for the detents. I can't think of any way or reason for the throttle to stop at 75% and be unable to push past, the rubber stoppers are tiny and should in no way be able to stop the throttle moving totally, simply bumps in the road so to speak....

Yup it's not the game I have an issue with. :)

IMO, look into the alternatives too, i.e., CH. I'm not that fond of the overall quality of my X52 Pro. The hardware could be more refined (mouse stick is worthless, the screw for the adjustable handrest got stripped and replacing it was a bit tricky, overall it's got too many spurious bells and whistles) and the software is just a big pile (if you don't need it, don't install the profiler software... the current drivers at least seem to be fairly stable).

(edit) Oh, I'd also recommend removing the throttle detents. It's just a big chunk of greased plastic jamming against two small nubs on the throttle axle, and at least for me the thing got way better without it.

A +1 for the CH pedals too, those are great no matter what stick you have, albeit a bit noisy, and give you more precision on the stick once you have your feet under control. Using the twist on the X52 I often ended up squeezing the first trigger stage or finding it difficult to use the thumb buttons and hats. The rubber feet together with the rather light base can also make that feature tricky since you often end up just turning the entire device instead of twisting the handle; YMMV there depending on the surface you put the thing on and the general amount of dust accumulating there.

I have the normal X52 and I am totally satisfied with it.

While the X52 Pro has a few nice additional features (being able to control the lbutton lighting in order to serve as status indicators ... and the screen at the throttle being controllable) I don´t need those features so badly that I would want to pay the higher price for the Pro-Version
