Ships Which ship do you think has the most 'character'?

I like a lot of ships. Probably all of them in reality but some I find have more character than others. They just feel fun/different etc and aren't just another set of numbers on a spreadsheet. So here are a couple of my favorite character ships.

1. Keelback.
Come on you knew this was on the list! Funky rotating engines. Klaxon boost alarm. Fighter bay if desired. It has a very 'millennium falcon' to me being a cargo type ship that has been modified for combat. The only problem it has is it's top speed. But I can live with that.

2. Cobra IV.
Again another sure spot on the list. It is the ultimate swiss army knife in the small ship class. Silly number of internals. Good weapon placement. Cobra style. It is a bit of a slug but outfitted well and a bit of engie love it has a perfectly acceptable flight profile. Won't win any races though. Most people are disappointed in this because it doesn't have the MK III's speed. Well if it did it would be totally OP. A few extra m/s wouldn't hurt though :) And looks sexy as heck in midnight black!

3. Diamondback Explorer.
Probably my most mainstream ship pick. Yes it has the legs of a cyber enhanced grasshopper etc but tbh that isn't why I like it. It has a funky flight profile with really good manoeuvring thrusters which lends itself to a very 'attack chopper' flight style. With the 3 med + 1 large hard point can pack a wallop and has the same flexible internals as the cobra III. It's a bit heavy but with some basic thruster mods easily breaks the 400m/s boost so perfectly fine for most applications. And who doesn't want to fly a midnight black attack chopper spacecraft!

4. ASP-Scout.
WHY? I hear you cry. Well it is crazy agile. has an oversized power distro for it's weapon load out (2s + 2m) so it can fire power hungry setups for ages. And coupled with it's agility it's ToT can be just daft! It looks cool IMO, kinda like a spaceship modelled on an ole english electric lightning fighter! Despite its rather flat large profile you can be quite hard to hit by keeping side/front on to your targets and strafing to avoid damage. After it's internal buffs it a really flexible machine now that lends itself to a medium multirole setup quite nicely. I hope when they bring out atmospheric flight that the wings swing out.

5. Dropship.
This thing is a tank pure and simple! It's heavy, hits hard and can take a pounding like nobody's business. I just looks the business with it's angles and straight lines. It flys like you'd expect, ponderous and simple but once you get used to the drift and mod up the thrusters and PD you can nigh on perma boost and it becomes this monster ship buzzing around things like an supersized hornet!

Anyways there are a few of the ships I like for reasons other than blistering performance etc.

Whats yours?

Currently building a second Keelback (can't have to many!) with a pair of efficient PA and beam turrets, I'll probably fit the AX Taipan as it's got a lot hull DPS, within it's limitations it's a potent ship!

I've several Cobra 4 in storage so I must dust them off and have a play, the swiss army knife in ship form! (sadly so many people can't get past it's low speed)

I use the DBE quite a bit but I've never been able to get a usable combat fit so it ends up being a long range runabout so I'd welcome any suggestions re loadout.

Agreed I do like the Asp S it's really agile with decent range, speed and weapon array it's only downside is that it that substantial plan profile so as you say keep it edge on.

The FDS is probably my favorite ship simply because it's got a lot of character, the creaks and groans it makes changing speed and direction are epic (TBH a bit like me in the morning ;))

The FGS like the FDS has a lot of character crazy firepower and yaw rate make it quite a different ship to fly

The Viper 4 with a lot of engineering is a real solid unassuming ship and fun to fly, even with the additional hull it's still a fairly small ship kinda feels like you wear it! ;)

I find a lot of the bigger ships Python, Anaconda, Corvette etc to be so capable that the game loses a fair bit of a challenge, there's nothing wrong with them they just make things a bit too easy.

Yup. All true.

I can't comment on the FGS as it's a ship I don't have access to yet. But from looking at it, it feels like it would be a bigger, tougher version of the Keelback with a decade of military training under it's belt!

I didn't mention the Viper IV despite being one of my faves purely because it's a bit too good in the small ship class. Engineered its an absolute beast! Quick, agile and bloody tough.

@Ceekay Here is my current setup for my DBX that has seen combat in HazRES without issue and killed elite vettes in assassination missions.

https://eddp.co/u/dUxxnyo5

And this is what I'd modify it to for CZ work for massacre missions and what not.

https://eddp.co/u/PlKTQDcM

The key for Combat in the DBX is not to think of it as a plane in space but literally like the attack choppers it resembles. So not much speed but nearly all lateral/vertical movement. It's excellent for dodging around asteroids in a HAZ etc.

I own and have flown to varying degrees every ship in the game so far.

However you need to define how you want to clasify "character" there.

The most character in nostalgia would be the Cobra mk 3, the one with looks personally has to be the Corvette, the most fun is a toss-up between the Vulture and the Gunship to me - the most used has to be the Python.

Funny that this also reads just like an ‘underrated ship’ list...

You’ve listed some of my personal favourites here, the Dropship was the first ship I ever bought a paint pack for and to this day is still the most fun I’ve had in ED. I was still a noob when I bought it and it took me a few weeks to fully outfit it. 4 seeker missiles and a large beam, man she could insta-gib all the stuff...

Keelback is definitely the ship with most character and was the second ship I bought paint for. Learned how to engineer properly in a Keelback back in the days when I actually enjoyed collecting mats. Love that ship in a fighter/salvage role.

Diamondback Explorer is totally underrated for PVE combat. Vulture firepower and Asp jumps with enough module flexibility to do cargo, passenger and salvage jobs, you can’t beat that price. Looks great in black. She’s the winner on this list for me, always sounds like it’s about to stall, a diamond in the rough... :)

Character is quite simply whatever you decide gives your ships something....

what makes you fly a ship other than 'pure stats' so to speak.

If you fly a ship purely because of stats.... well then you probably won't 'get' this thread. :)

There's just something about my 'vette that keeps bringing me back. He's a bad-a..., and a great multi-role all wrapped up in one ship. :)

I do tend to fly it like a Vulture (close in turning knife fight style) so a more distanced dodging approach could work better, once I've finished Keelback 2 I'll build another DBE and check out your builds, is it just me or does it sound like a steam train when building up speed?

Thx dude!

Of the 14 (Ok, 15 if I count the second sidewinder that's still parked in my starting system) ships I currently have, I much prefer the Fer-De-Lance for anything other than long distance traveling. These days it's usually kitted out for what it does best, - dog fighting with pirate npcs. But I've used it as a smuggling ship, a mission runner (nothing quite as amusing as being pulled over by an npc while you're running messages for the Empire and then just blowing them up for a nice cash bonus when you reach port) - and I've even done a few passenger runs with it when I was grinding imperial rank. Is it the best ship for all those roles? Nope.

But it's a fun ship to fly and its engine sound is amazing.

Sounds like I need to checkout the Keelback and maybe revisit the Cobra.

I'm a fan of the Orca. Fast, looks nice, good range and it's comfortable to fly. I like the boost "seatbelt ding" too. Not too many negatives with this ship.

I am quite fond of the Lakon ships, hence the AspX and DBX in my collection; but in terms of character, I think the Type-9 would currently be my favourite, even though I have never owned one.

It just feels like it would make a fantastic deep space research platform; something you might find in the Alien universe.

If they reduced the weight of the ship to Anaconda's levels (even with a massive price increase), I would love to give this ship a try.

FDS and T9 here. I like how they look the part for their lore purpose, and handle like it. Planetary drops on FDS and T9 asteroid mining just feels right.

Have to say I like the DBX a lot for its lines, but I don't find anything too striking about it feel-wise. I do, however, find its limit on internal slots quite endearing, funnily enough. Limitations promote compromise and give character to ship classes imho. There's nothing as boring as the Asp/Python/Conda school of design.

Small thought finally for the T7 just because it's got a bit of a (Privateer) Tarsus vibe.
