Newcomer / Intro Which ship should I go for? (Very new player)

Good day =)

I'm still in the starter loaner Sidewinder. I've currently got 339,920 credits due to an incredibly lucky Anaconda find that I managed to take down with 3 security forces (long story, it nearly killed me. I nearly died just reporting the thing to a base, too).

I'd like to get a new ship, but I'm not sure what to aim for. I like to 'splore but I also enjoy the combat. I was going to get a Cobra, then saw how expensive they were. Not keen on completely cleaning myself out.
I'd like something that's a bit of an all rounder but not too fussed on the cargo shifting. Any suggestions?

I think the Cobra is your friend, as the first real all-rounder. Even after getting the millions required for other ships, I found I didn't want to sell it. It's done me well getting my name on systems while exploring, making profit trading when filled-to-the-gills with cargo bays, and saw me through many conflict zones and some community goal rewards as a fighter.

Just be patient and earn enough to cover the insurance and some extra for a decent fuel scoop.

Some people like to get a dedicated trading ship first, grind, grind, grind, until they have credits leaking out of their thermal vents, and then move up to something else. Personally, I have enjoyed the freedom and flexibility of the Cobra.

In any event, good luck!!!

i would suggest the Cobra as well, hit a Nav Beacon and start hitting wanted npc after they are already in combat with the local forces, this way you will survive longer to get the experience and most importantly the bounty $ from their destruction.

Yeah, you want an all rounder based on what you have said... at your stage - with a sidewinder, bounty hunting at NAV points and RES will be the fastest way to make some money... if you spec out your Sidie a little more.... or a basic eagle you will be able to earn a little faster.... e.g. something like this

http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60L,5QH5QH5QH,2-3m5K5U2C3I3m3c,7Q402M2Uc

i wouldnt even bother with a KWS, just head out to your system's NAV or RES and in a couple of hours you will have enough to be able to get a cobra, kit it out a little and begin doing what a cobra lets you do best.... anything you want...

(at this stage rare trading or BH will probably get you the most credits), but you can explore or do normal trading or mining.... the universe is your oyster.

Can I ask a tangentially related question? I see nav beacons pop up on my navigation tab but never bothered visiting them. What function do they serve?

the nav beacon is the jumping in point for anyone visiting that system. you'll get a cross-section of different ships there - traders, bounty hunters, security and pirates

here's +1 vote for the Cobra, an excellent all-round ship and it will really earn its keep

Go for a hauler , that got me on the road for the Cobra , then go to RES , and earn millions , bored with that , back into outfitting more cargo , less weapons ,start rare trading , Cobra does it all

Using my Cobra for RES , only these days , but

I will vote for the cobra, but add that you will need 750k minimun before I would even consider getting a cobra for RES or Navs.

If you are looking for a ship now with the money you have I would consider an Eagle, Adder, or Viper(you will need around 400k to make the viper viable).

Personally I would go for a Viper now and gradually upgrade it in Nav beacons. Navs are a lot more forgiving than a Res when you aren't in a high specced ship. Then when you have enough experience, decent weapons, and gear in your Viper go to a RES. The Viper is a pure combat ship, but the earning potential can quickly put you into a cobra that might fit your style better since its a bit of a jack of all trades.

Always remember to keep enough money in the bank for insurance. Accidents can happen quite frequently in a RES.

I went to an Eagle and traded it in almost immediately for a Viper. The Viper is doing awesome destruction in RES and Nav Beacon areas so I can recommend it as a good fighting ship.

I had been thinking about a Cobra, but didn't realise it would eat all of my money. Thought it was a little cheaper.

I guess I could do the whole nav-point dog fight-a-thon thing, I enjoy the fights I've had so far. Worth buying a gimballed pair of guns before starting? I currently use a fixed multicannon just because the lasers always feel kinda puny to me.
I would like to get a ship because the sidewinder doesn't feel like *mine*, you know? Like I got a hand-me-down Fiat as my first car from dad because he wanted a new Mazda. And until I buy my own car it'll always feel like the car no-one wanted.

Thanks for the advice so far, guys. I'm still working out what the stats and such mean on the outfitters. I might dig up a tutorial for that some time.

If you want to fight, you can update to the Eagle right now with your funds. Aim at the Viper, which is the best fighting vessel early on. However, both Eagle and Viper can't do much else than combat and running missions.
The Cobra, as suggested by many here, is an excellent ship, but requires a lot more money to equip. I remember I bought the Cobra as soon as I could afford the hull (plus insurance, always keep some money left over for insurance!), and I quickly sold it again because I noticed I couldn't afford any upgrades. All new ships come with E grade equipment, which is very poor. So you need some more cash available for a new ship, not only the hull. I went Sidewinder -> Eagle (->Cobra, fail) -> Viper and then Cobra again. I used both Viper and Cobra for a very long time and still love both. Remember you can own multiple ships, so when you have the money later, nothing stops you to buy back that one ship you loved so much earlier on even though it's not "the best" in addition to your current ship(s).

About gimballed, that's a matter of hot debate. Fixed weapons do more damage, but are more difficult to aim with. Gimballed weapons do a bit less damage, but as you hit more, your overall damage is probably higher. Some ships (and most players) have Chaff Launchers, which make your gimballs useless for a few seconds, which is why most people prefer fixed in PVP.
Also, many say that real men can aim properly and use fixed weapons. I personally prefer gimballed. :)
Just experiment with gimballed and fixed weapons and see what fits you more. You make no loss exchanging equipment in the outfitter, so feel free to experiment. I guess none of both are "better". Elite is about tinkering with equipment and ships and settle with what YOU like best.

Tip when swapping ships: Sell (or replace with E grade, as you cannot sell all slots) all equipment in the outfitter first, then trade in your ship. Trading in nets you with a 10% loss, so when you sold all the expensive equipment without loss first, you can swap ships and experiment with them with minimal financial loss.

EDIT: I should add, there are other viable routes to richdom. You can instead go the router Adder and Hauler for your Cobra, and earn cash with trading (easy cash) and mining (debatable, will be better with patch 1.3). However, that's a matter of taste, I personally can trade occasionally, but not exclusively else I die of boredom. You need to understand there are basically three categories of ships: 1) Combat (Eagle, Viper...), 2) Multirole (Sidewinder, Adder, Cobra, ...) 3) Traders (Hauler, Type-6, ...). If you have a ship of role (1) or (3), you are pretty much limited to that playstyle. If you have a multirole ship, it won't be as great as real fighter or a real trader, but can do pretty much everything in the game. The Cobra is a combat beast, though. Again it's a matter of taste what you prefer. Again, I personally like those multi-role ships, but you could also have a dedicated fighter and trader ship in your hangar and switch accordingly. So much freedom... :)

Whatever you want to do the Cobra can do it, you can get more cargo space , 52 if you risk sacrificing your shields as I did. It's quick enough to escape if you get interdicted by someone too strong, and it can be upgraded to be a good explorer. I had one for a good while and have now upgraded to an Asp. But I won't sell the Cobra, it's safely stored ;-)

I faced a similar dilemma, and ended up buying the Eagle. I think I ended up dropping almost 200k credits to get it kitted out 'just so'. That said, I was really happy with it, and it helped me earn credits faster in RESes. I'm in a Cobra now, and I would seriously recommend it for what you're looking to do. Just make sure you have a few hundred thousand credits over the base price so you can get it kitted out a bit.

if it serves you, this was my ship progression:

Loaned Sidey -> Eagle (purchased with 400K on the bank and kitted the max i could) -> Viper + Mining Adder (with 3 millions in bank) -> Viper (full) + RareRun ASP -> combat ASP + T6 -> T7 -> python(trading) -> T9 -> Python(full combat) + T9 -> Anaconda(Trading) -> Python(full combat) + Hauler(Scout) + Vulture + T6(explorer) + Dropship (heavy duty armed miner) + Anaconda(full combat)

I've never owned an Eagle - I went straight to the Viper.

It'll hold about 16t and still be a viable ship for other tasks than killing as long as you don't expect to get rich trading in it. It's a good ship for 90% of the faction rep missions (the "bring us 44t of rutile" missions excepted.)

Take it to a RES and make the 5 million you need to upgrade it and buy and upgrade a T6 for trading, then head to the fringes of your chosen major faction space for untroubled trading. Make about another 3mcr, than you can either refit the T6 for exploration or buy a Cobra to spec for that.

Pretty much what's been said...

You want to plot your quickest route to a Cobra.

If combat is your thing then a Viper fits. If trading or exploring a Hauler or Adder works well. Once you get to the Cobra, you'll be eyeing up the T-6, Vulture or Asp to do trading, combat or all-purpose respectively.

^ This was my experience. I found myself favoring combat and traded in my cobra for a heavily A-specd viper that has made me more in a few hours then most of my time in the cobra, But it has given up all versatility and fits for optimal Mass V Module performance. i managed to squeeze a shield booster in the top by off-lining the cargo hatch :D i have since re-bought my cobra and now use it as a well-armed trader.

Plenty of people are suggesting a Cobra and I would too, but if that seems too expensive, get an Adder. Not as nice, but still works for pretty much everything and cheaper than a Cobra. That was what I did.

I found the Adder as an intermediate step to Cobra very decent. She can do a bit of trade, can do medium exploring trips easily, and with a few shield and weapons upgrades, can pack a nasty sting. Certainly enough to deal with low to medium level NPCs. <br>

As for weapons, I am a gimballed man. I might also add a tip re weapon load out: You seemed to infer that you had only cannons on your sidey. Ideally, you want both lasers and cannons in some combination. The themal lasers to take down shields and the kinetic cannons to do hull damage. <br>

Again, a personal choice for the Adder was a medium pulse laser and two small cannons. I wouldn't separate them in to two fire groups as they are too small to separate, but the pulse is key to stripping an enemy naked of shields ASAP. A lot of NPCs will break off firing when they lose shields, in my experience, and try to regenerate them, meaning the sooner you get them down, the more it becomes about simply getting behind them and bashing away, rather than having to worry about your own damage. <br>

PvP is a totally different ball game.
