Which space games are you playing whilst you wait for Elite 4?

Whilst nothing seems to have captured the great feel of the original Elite (for me at least), we have to find some way to sate our space trading game desires whilst we wait for Elie 4. :) So, what has everybody been playing?

I recently played Freelancer - well put together, but I thought it dumbed down the experience a bit too much, plus I really miss the old pitch/roll control system.

There's also a new kid on the block - Dark Star One. I can't get that running at a decent frame rate on my ageing GeForce 5 though, and the demo has trouble with many joysticks, but I'd be interested to hear opinions on it for when I get round to upgrading my PC.

I also got a free (with some hardware) copy of a game called 'Elite Starfighter' (rather dubious naming there from a copyright pov ;) ). It plays like a two planet version of the original elite, with slightly better graphics. I can't really recommend it, but it killed some time.

The last space game I played was First Encounters (a few weeks ago).

I've never found another game to compare to Elite (or its sequels), thats why I'm waiting so anxiously for Mr Braben to give us some news on Elite 4.

I haven't, either. The others so far have felt too limited; I still return to FFE whenever I want to actually feel a part of the universe.

Well I played the MMORG "Eve" for a while but you have no real control over your ship and the combat is turn based. So i soon got Bored! Cant wait for Elite 4 and I just hope it will be as good as the previous Elite games!:)

Well Im not really waiting for Elite 4 as that would be daft.

But games I have been playing over the last few months are Sensible Soccer 2006 (until England lost the World Cup), and since then Galactic Civilisations 2which is very good whilst I wait for Space Empires 5 which could be a great game.

I also particularly like Civilisation 4.

In terms of simulations the only ones around worth playing are Silent Hunter 3and Falcon 4 Allied Force.

I touched on Oblivion but didn't like it much - not atmosphereic enough for me.

Hi all. :)
At this time the only space game I play is Galactic Civilizations 2.

I have tested some other space games but never found the feeling of Frontier Elite 2. So I don't play it and wait for an Elite 4. (Like most of us here I suppose)
Perhaps I will test Darstar One but don't sure of his interest for me.

I am currently (still lol) playing Master of Orion 2 which is my all time fav game. Galactic Civilizations II looks interesting and I might purchase it soon. :)

My favourite storyline/combat games for a long time were the I-War games, they had a true newtonian physics combat model and were fantastic fun when played with a joystick.

Had some fun with the I war games aswell but they were not up to the same standard as the X series.

Played the first one for a little while but hated (with a vengence) the idea of jumpgates. Just couldn't stand the idea of having to go to a certain point to be able to jump.

Gave up on the series as a result other wise I may still have been playing them.

I'm surprised that the X series hasn't been mentioned yet...

Freelancer was just an arcade shoot em up in disguise though.

Sure... I'd like to say, Im co-writing it.

Its called Epoch 3D

Here is a live journal I've kept for a year now outlining bits of ideas, and some of the work as we progress. (best to scroll to the bottom right away and read from there.) And don't laugh, its not an easy job working on a project like this, it requires an aweful lot of ignorence! Also a lot of the journal is me outlining my path of education so its probably boring.

Also a web based game I co-wrote, with the same people. About the same world, the world of Epoch. Its more a web-style command and conquer.

(There will be a game of this starting up soon, we run sessions for 3 months at a go, its real time so it may take a fleet, 18 hours to make a jump, you log in, order the jump and log out.. 18 hours later they translate into your enemies system ready to crush him! (course you gota build your fleets first and stuff) Completely for the fun, were not trying to make money so it don't cost people or nothing, a Register link will apear there in a few days, once we get the server up.)

X3 was the last (till became pressed for time:) ). Once out there was no big desire to return and go on... and nothing essential to remember. After some time going to taste Darkstar One.

Oh also I played Eve for about 3 months but I did'nt like the controls, nor he way you had skills for shooting and stuff, I prefare to be in control of my ship. Its the way han solo would have wanted it. It was more rpg than simulator.

Cool, good luck with that - I'll keep an eye on it. I must admit, working on some kind of space combat game is something I've been dying to do, but being a two man team, it's unlikely we could get anything finished in a sensible amount of time!

In the space sim genre : X1, X2, X3, Freelancer, EVE.

The X Series has been an exercise in patience.

EVE is damn beautiful, but not being able to truly pilot your ship is its main downfall. Other than that though I don't mind it and am still playing it.

Cheers!

sorry for going off-topic, but I get my Elite-alike fix from playing and modding the GTA games, and Operation Flashpoint, aka OFP. Not very spacey at all, really, and no procedural generation, but they evoke a similar sense of 'freedom' I got from FEII. Well a little bit, anyway. I honestly can't get into any other space 'sims' after having played the Elite series. Nothing has ever captured my imagination like FEII. <sniff> I want the whole universe, not a submarine sim with colourful - and totally unrealistic - nebulae daubed over every inch of sky. And 'jumpgates' are lame compared to hyperdrives. Jumpgates that do something funky - like maybe intergalactic shots - could be interesting.
