Which Tracker to get until Oculus Rift CV

Which tracker do you recommend the most?

TrackIR, the original
http://www.trackir.eu
Proven, but expensive. Clip might break.

Delan Clip, the sturdy one
http://www.delanengineering.com/
I'm guessing with the PS3 camera it does everything the TrackIR does?

ED Tracker, the community hack
http://edtracker.org.uk/
Cheaper, but offers less movement.

Note: I don't know if these are all available options. Please add any I don't know about.

So you know something about my setup and goals: I currently have an Eizo Foris FX2431. Yes, only 1 screen. I'm not going to build a 3 screen setup, since I'm waiting for the Oculus Rift CV anyway. Some people have told me a tracker doesn't make sense with only 1 screen, but other people disagreed. I've also been told pedals are useless for ED. Others recommended CH pedals above all else. So I'm not sure what to do. I know it's obviously better with 3 screens, but I think there should be at least some benefit and joy from using a tracker with 1 screen. If you don't totally disagree and convince me not to waste any money on a tracker without 3 screens, please let me know which tracker option I should go for!

EDIT:
I own the Shure 1540 headphones. They have a rather unusual headband. So I'm wondering: can I attach the EDtracker on the earpiece instead of on top of the headband? This link should give you pics of the headphones: www.google.com/search?q=shure+1540&tbm=isch

I've been using the EDTracker for several months now, I also only use 1 screen. I can highly recommend it.
You certainly don't need 3 screens to see the benefit of any tracking device.

Using TIR5 here myself, works wonderfully and and I honestly don't see how you could break the included clip short of stepping on it. I've had mine for about 2 years now.

i agree, i have 3 screens now, but had the EDtracker when i only got one and it definitely makes sense with one screen too

it was cheap, completely assembled and fairly quick delivered (i think it was 2 weeks, but i heard it can take longer)
i didnt want a TrackIR because of the price and the weird sensors, and i'm surely not wearing a cap at home
the PS3Eye sounds interesting i just fear it has troubles when not enough light

can't commment much on pedals, they are for sure not necessary but not useless either i would say

generally 3 screens is nice, not needed but just so good for peripheral sights
when i first tried it, i was laughing at my screen, because it's kinda ridiculous, but in a good way :)

I am using the TrackIR 5 with the Pro Clip and its awesome. It very precise and i didn't found out how to break the pro clip. Maybe if you step on it or punch it off your headphones but it seemed to be pretty stable so far.

I am also using TrackIR with the ProClip and have no problems at all. As far as breaking the ProClip you'll have to work hard to do that. BTW, the original problem was a brittle plastic used in the first ProClips sets - this was recognized and a new denser plastic was put into use over two years ago.

TrackIR 5 works perfectly for this game and is a joy to use ingame.

Edit: Some people also seem confused as to what comes with TrackIR 5. The basic TrackIR 5 program comes with a "hat Clip" which you clip to the bill of a cap which, of course, you wear. The 'deluxe' version comes with the "ProClip" which mounts to your headset so you don't need a baseball cap; and it also includes the 'hat clip" featured in the slightly cheaper version.

thx, didn'T know that - and i ofc expect the TrackIR to be the best tracking system, just too expensive for me to try it out for fun...

No experience, but I would have thought head tracking would have slightly more relative benefit with one screen than with three, not less, as single-monitor pilots need to look left and right more often?

I've ordered an EdTracker to use until the consumer Rift is available.

I have two monitors, but only run ED in one. I have a DIY headtracker using LEDs and Freetrack, and it's a game-changer, especially in dogfights.

Thanks for all your answers!

I'm wondering why I should get the TrackIR for the price they're asking though. Right now I'm trying to decide between the DelanClip and the EDtracker.

DelanClip: £45 with PS3 cam and shipping
EDtracker: £46 with the newer board, enclosure and shipping

So does the DelanClip do everything the TrackIR does? If so, I'm wondering why I should get the EDtracker, which does less, for the same price? It seems the DelanClip is the obvious choice! Am I missing something? I guess the EDtracker only makes sense if you build it yourself so you can get it cheaper. However I'd really like whatever I order to work out of the box.

Based on the info on EdTracker's site, the older chip is just fine and better value.

A couple of advantages I can think of for EdTracker are that it's smaller (and out of view?) and it doesn't need a camera in front of you (less to go wrong?). I suppose it depends if these or the extra 3DOF is more important to you.

I'd be really interested in any feedback from Commanders who've used both TrackIR/DelanClip and EDTracker - we've had a few folks buy EDTracker saying they didn't get on with the LED/webcam solutions.

Personally I find the EDTRacker less laggy and more precise that the TrackIR I tried, but then I would say that :D

ED Tracker all the way. I have tried track ir and it simply does not compare in my opinion, especially with the price considered.

Yeah, has anyone actually used a DelanClip AND an EDtracker?

Sorry for being pedantic, but which version of the TrackIR did you use? I've heard the early versions were really bad.

Anyway, you're right about the price. If I'm not missing some major feature of the TrackIR the price is ridiculous. For one TrackIR I can get THREE assembled EDtrackers with new board and enclosure or THREE DelanClips including camera. That's why I keep asking if the DelanClip is missing something compared to the TrackIR or if the EDtracker is extremely laggy and unprecise or something.

I bought some times ago DelanClip and PS3 cam for ARMA 3. And it was pain for me to set up this thing (remove id filter from cam was no issue - but it takes about 1 hour for me), I tried different distances between camera and DelanClip, different vertical positions with no joy.

Then came Elite Dangerous and I found EDTracker so I bought (completely assembled) one and no setup is needed (just launch EDTracker UI) and it works flawlessly.
So I vote for EDTracker.

Be advised: EDTracker does not work in E: D 3.9.1 for me (unable to bind in controll setup).

I've used FaceTrackNoIR without too much hassle before I got the DK2. Needs a bit of setting up, but worked fine for me.

Haven't used EDTracker, and soldering up my DIY FreeTrack was a bit of a pain, as was fiddling with the curves on the software. I did get some minor satisfaction with being able to say I built mine myself, as well as only spending $6.22 on the parts...but If I had to do it all again, I probably would go with either DelanClip or EDtracker, although I would probably wait to make sure my choice would work with the full release on Dec 16th. Definitely wouldn't pay the current price for TrackIR, as long as one of these other two worked.

I have a trackIR 5 which spends 99 % of the time in its box... Not because it is not amazing but because the DK2 is more amazing. I also just ordered the Edtracker having seen one at Fantasticon - they look like they track smoother.

Lol, I am in total agreement Rob!

I persevered for ages and got a Delan clip but sensibly priced IR stuff Just didnt work for me , just too noisy.
