Which way round is the station now?

I don't think there is such thing as a station not orbiting a planet. There are those which are pretty far away bu they still roughly face the planet they orbit. I don't know if some stations are orbiting stars (they may, I don't really know) but then, they would face the star.
Some orbit things currently not even in game yet such as comets. They are in the BGS and are those 'random' things that slow you down in SC but physically they are not there.

Oh, this makes sense.

Learn something every day, thank you!

But you do, everytime you pull out manualy target the station contact. Hologram even has arrows that point at entrance.

The "correct" side always rotates counter clockwise.

Also, there's little arrows on the display for the "egg" station that points towards the front of the station.

The larger stations, well they are kind've obvious.

When you target the station (or request docking permission) the HUD station graphic for Coriolis stations has a little arrowhead (same shape as the cursor in the galaxy & system maps) on the sides pointing to the entrance, and it's aligned the same way as the station as seen from your cockpit.

If you need a pointer to the entrance of an Orbis station, I'm afraid I can't help you ;)

OP is talking about showing station orientation in SC, which is something we have asked for since 1.3...

It would be really useful if the little holographic image of the station would b e so kind as to show me it's "positioning" in relation to my position (or direction maybe?).
It does this already.

On entry into the station instance, lock onto the station. You will see little arrows on the holo-display showing you the way in, relative to where you are.

Station position has been consistent since 1.0. Drop inside the arc of the station orbit. You can place the planet (or moon, or whatever the station is orbiting) behind you in SC, put the station in front of you and boom, there you are. That's not mandatory, simply dropping inside the arc puts me within spitting distance of the mail slot each time.

I know how the system works, thank you. That doesn't mean that a dynamic hologram wouldn't be a great addition to SC.

PS
If you wonder why I mentioned 1.3 instead of 1.0... this is when they added more / the first holograms for SC IIRC, before everything had the same icon. Could be 1.2 though.

BTW, I really want to see one of those just because I'm curious. Can either of you name one?
I'm pretty awful at taking notes of things like that, but some I can name.

Crown Dock in the Yen Di System is a more typical kind of these station, they are often in a system with just one or more T-tauris and no planets

Filipchenko Terminal in the Himanezgana System is a Outpost orbiting 2 T-tauris far out and all alone, you can also see on its orbiting line that its orbiting around nothing, I guess thats one of these comets or whatever that have no visuals

Stone's Legacy in Lawd 26 is a bit more fancy and unusale, while you can see there are asteroid belts between the White Dwarf and the Station its actually really close to the white dwarf if I remember correct. Not sure what madman put a station there!

I've seen systems like this, too. In fact when I get to the stations, there's often a small orbit line but no object to orbit around. I think Flipchenko Terminal is actually rotating around the center of gravity between those two stars.

I am aware that the stations almost always "face" the planet that they may be orbiting, which is great.
However, sometimes when you're trying to make an approach, the planet is out of view (or if it isn't orbiting a planet, you have no frame of reference).
I don't tend to use mouse look much as it means taking my hands of the flightstick.

It's only a little thing, but as we all know, it's the little things that make a game! :D

It literally does everything you are asking for. It even tracks and rotates based on your relative position to it when targeted. I can approach and line up my approach to the mail slot without ever looking out the cockpit glass if I had to.

Yes it does orbit around the two stars, but what I meant is in supercruise with orbiting lines turned on you can see when you go to the outpost that it does a small loop around nothing.

Again, I think he is talking about showing station orientation in SC.

That's exactly right! Thank you! :)

I have no problem working out where the front is when I can see the physical station in front of me. It's in SuperCruise that is the problem.
And the worst is when You accidentally approach one of the long stations from behind and appear right on top of the hull!
(I keep a spare pare of pants for these moments! :D )

I have never seen any arrows showing the orientation of the station entrance, are they on the little holographic image? or somewhere else in the UI? This is something I have wondered myself, I have been using a docking computer to find the entrance. Seems ridiculous to me not to have the holographic rotate.

Yes it's on the holographic, but only when you drop out and target the station (as in you are in the stations instance. And it does rotate once there)

My client must be bugged then because it most definitely does not do this. I will double check when I get home, but I have been wondering about this for a while myeslf now. Ive jsut been using a docking computer to navigate when I dont come in from the planet side as the planet slows me down to much to come in from that side. If I didnt use mouselook and look out the cockpit glass it is absolutely impossible to find the mail slot on my client.

Ill try to post screenshots when I get home (dont know how to make in game videos, havent bothered to take the time to learn since I have never had a need to do so)
