White Knight - Plz Explain

OK, I have been on this forum for a few months and am still in the dark over White Knights

Someone posts a rant complaining about some issue or another and then another poster will claim that is the way the game is supposed to work. He gets labeled a 'White Knight' by the OP. I assume if he explains why the issue is not bad then he avoids this label. Not totally sure about that though.

Several questions (and no polls)
Where did the term White Knight come from? Is it a colloquial british term like 'Bob's your uncle' or was it termed on this forum?

Is there a White Knight Badge? Some underground organization with a secret handshake (like the luminati).

In closing and apologies to the Moody Blues

Knights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Posts that I've written
Never meaning to send

Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say any more

All joking aside, a little background and history on white knights would be illuminating.

Curious minds want to know.

I just checked Urban Dictionary and most of it was a guy defending (in his view) a girl. This was the other definition

From Urban Dictionary
White Knight
On an internet forum, a person who defends a member who is clearly wrong, usually with the hopes of gaining brownie points with said member. Often seen as negative behavior.

Close but no cigar IMO

White Knighting is a term that is far older then Elite Dangerous.

A "White Knight" is a 'Hero' that rides to the rescue of whatever is being attacked, be it a person, place, or thing. In this case, a thing. Elite Dangerous.

It is meant to be an insult claiming the person who is 'Defending' the game is blind to the issues being raised and riding to the rescue by 'attacking' the ranter in question.

It comes from the older usage of color designations. "White" meaning good or heroic verse "Black" which is evil or villainous dating back to the Dark Ages where White is viewed as a pure, good hearted, heroic being verses Black which is seen as a very dark, shadowy, evil color used for intimidation.

Similar to "White Hat" and "Black Hat" which is the American Old Western version.

It's meant to be more of a literary reference which is even older then the Internet.

As for the argument itself? Elite occupies a very rare position of being a true Sandbox in which you are dumped into the universe with little to no real introduction and left to fend for yourself.

For some, this is overwhelming and they can feel like the game is being unfair when it performs a certain way asking for things to make their life easier instead of asking for help understanding how something works or what instruments they need to be watching.

For others, they learn, adapt, and survive. They ether figure out what to do or ask for help and receive support of people who understand what needs to happen and are more then willing to teach. They accept these lessons and don't have the same troubles as those who are angry and want the game changed.

When these two worlds collide (and collide they do since there's no real entry barrier) you get the situation you described.

Caliber_az pretty much nalied it with that definition of how it was originally intended now its more like the below.

Someone who disagrees with your point of view, normally in response to a negative comment about something", so ya call them a white knight!

Not exactly how it was intended to be meant but how its used now, also you can replace White Knight with fanboi, fanboy et al loads of ways to call some one some silly       name just because you dont agree with their response to your comment or thread.

Would you have not written this last part, i would have agreed. But the last part very much is biased. There is a number of people on the forum who defend each and every mechanic of the game, even if it's clearly broken. Even if observant people can easily point out problems, those people just repeat that everybody but them is doing it wrong and the game is perfectly fine. There's a plethora of cases where they only acknowledged the existance of a bug once the developers not only confirmed that there is a bug but the bug was mentioned to be fixed in the patch notes.
.
So what you write is just one side of the coin. Some perceived problems are none, but in other cases existing problems are denied by a small but vocal part of the forum population. They are who most often is considered to be "White Knights" in the context of this game.
