Hello. I have quite a bit of exploration data to sell but cant quite find the right stations to sell it to. Tried a few that were relatively close to the systems I scanned but no dice. Maybe the stations in farther systems or some other factor I am not aware of. If anyone has any input I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

The data must be sold to a station that is 20LY or greater from where you scanned it from. Usually from your "home" station, so you gain some faction rep.

Don't forget that a detailed surface scanner also increases your potential earnings. If you are a dedicated explorer and have the credits to spare, invest in one. A few decent scans, especially ocean and earth like worlds, will yield more credits when you turn in your data. Metal rich worlds also give a fairly decent price.
Also consider saving up for a advanced discovery scanner (1.6m or so credits. ) it makes scanning for objects so much easier as its range is infinite.

The discovery range is infinite, you will still need to approach an object at a certain distance to be able to perform a detailed scan. When selling data remember also that just like trading it will add to your reputation with the controlling faction at that station. Sometimes this doesn't show up immediately, so if you are selling a lot of data pause occasionally and check the colour of the station icon in the HUD display. If it has turned green you've improved standing with them. This also flows on to your standing with the major faction to whom they have allegiance. Once you hit "allied" status with that local faction your rep won't increase any more at that station, so move on to another station controlled by a local faction that has the same allegiance. This way you maximize the value of your data profits by increasing rep in the most efficient manner. Better rep will produce better missions locally, and open up the restricted ships from the Feds and Empire.
I didn't add that as I just assumed he'd have known what the surface and discovery scanners were for as it does say in the items description.
