Who else thinks this latest CG is going to Fail?

I for one do not think this community goal was ever going to make it, not with the current Mining mechanics. I sold my FDL for this Python mining ship.

My thoughts on mining:

If I have a 10 bin refinery, why do I still need to tell the hopper to refine items when I still have all my bins open free to use?

Consistently I find myself telling my refinery to start refining gold and other metals that I have previously told it to refine.

Please add the ability to designate each bin the item you wish to refine in that slot.

Second if a mineral or metal comes up that you do not have designated it is vaporized in the reactor automatically. None of this ejection bull! The only reason anyone needs to eject anything is for saving their butt from pirates.

Any more ideas on how to improve this please post... I wish I still had my FDL.

I personally like the way mining works, gives you something to do when blasting and or waiting for the limpets. I use a 6-bin refinery in my Python which should be enough to carry all the gems out there: Painite, Platinum, Palladium, Gold, Osmium, Silver. Some people I understand even ignore silver. I was working towards Osmium collection for the CG, where did you go to mine it? I went to Tofana, which is 40LYs from Abres. I managed to bring in about 40T but was too exhausted after that. Takes some time to mine properly!

I do hope it will get to Tier 1!

Hi Hammer. We have a pretty good tips and tricks thread going on here, courtesy of geoffrey.hdt: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=164372

note also: you can wait some time before allocating all the metals to the bins, with 4 medium mining lasers and 4 collectors you can often deplete an asteroid before having to allocate resources. This makes it a little less stressful.

Had a go at the Abres CG but the quantities of Osmium required is totally out of proportion with the supply, as it's a mined only metal acquiring it takes a lot longer than flying A - B and back to A, tier 1 looks to be around 40000 T I reckon 4000 T would be more realistic given how long it takes to find and mine Osmium.

I'm ok with most of the mining mechanic (although I don't bother with prospector drones TBH) its that mining CG's need to be adjusted to suit that mechanic, currently it looks like a standard commodity delivery CG.

I'm still doing the Abres one. Just over a day to go before it finishes and it looks like its set to fail.

Its cool. I was mining in another system before, and if it wasn't for the CG i'd still be there doing the same. Earning about the same.

Shame they didn't get the values adjusted right so that we stood a chance of getting higher tiers, never mind tier 1! It should at least give FD for thought regarding future CGs, and i'm still crossing my fingers for a last minute adjustment by CG on the required totals.

I agree with the OP. Mining is currently frustrating, and a pain in the neck. I mean that literally, bc I use a rift. So, the constant attention to my bins is very irritating and frustrating. Additionally, I had the misfortune to accidentally eject two almost full bins of osmium because the first selection is always on the eject button on the top bin.

You know, you can still put the ore you don't want into the bin, and vent it as it nears 100% to save you the 4 clicks, if it's that much of a hassle for ya.

Just refine the ordinary minerals along with the precious ones, then once your collector limpets wear out, eject the crud and move on a kilometre or so then start again.

thanks for the tip i will try it. also i would like to say that geoffrey tips and tricks thread is the only reason i tried mining and it has a lot of good info!

I agree 100% with this post

my problem is not with venting. I got a 10 bin refinery so i could keep all the resources that came into my possession. i just want my refinery to keep refining everything that comes into it
an auto refine button would be nice to have

i only added the part about vaporizing things you do not want because i know other people are having problems with it in there smaller ships.

I agree with the OP, insofar as mining is already fairly tedious, it doesn't need nuisances. It should be a slow, relaxing way to earn credits, apart from pirates ofc :) The ability to manage the crud metals better, especially for the poor beginner miners in their small ships, would be a kindness. Even if it was just programming the collectors not to pick up jettisoned cargo, that would go a long way to alleviating the frustration. Or the OP's solutions, which are even more thorough, but a little something would be nice.

Even more interesting would be if prospecting could be done effectively while mining. We could keep the tedious tasks, but if our attention was split between performing them, and trying to eyeball the next good rock, from where we were, then it becomes a challenge, and interesting. But for that, we would need a way of aiming a prospecting tool while we were stationary, or we would need a way to rotate while stationary with some degree of speed (DAMN you FD!), and our collectors would need not to crash into us while we did so. And prospectors would have to not suck. Like not be a latest to launch, first to die...
