Okay, I wonder, is there a way to see how many players are affiliated with each faction? EMPIRE/ALLIANCE/FEDERATION?
Not at the present time
It would seem like the latest powerplay update will not allow us to see that either... maybe your own faction, maybe some rudimentary information but nothing I was hoping for...
Tbh I would be alliance mainly because of FFEs game where they were allied with the Thargoids and I hope it carries across into ED.

X number of players are opearting in the empire, X number in the fed, and so on...
