Who liked the planetary surfaces

They look awesome... from afar.

Up close it didn't seem to be that much different, but I guess that up close it has more to do with topography than anything else. Let's see in Q4 the surface improvements, together with the hinted improvement in (well, first introduction of) exploration gameplay...

I was under the impression that Ed was going to land on a planet to show off the new textures but this never happened. However from the few images and clips that have been released they do look good.

I will look forward to what they are planning to do with actual surface modelling, like they hinted.

But even just with the improved colours, it looks 100x better than before. So yes, into the deep black with me, again.

When they were going to the belt I thought they were going to show the gas giant (inside it).

That would be a surprise!

The new textures are nice but nothing impressive.

It didn't look totally amazing in the stream when he (almost) landed. Few more shades of beige I think I saw. ;)

I am sure it will look much better when one is actually playing.

Sure, I like the look.. anything is better than what we've had. But...

Exploration, to me, is about a lot more than just "Oh, look, a pretty planet, take a picture."
Or collecting a Level 3 Detailed Scan.

Exploration should be a whole lot more involved - look at what Discovery has been doing on Mars all this time.
Soil samples analyzed, core samples taken and analyzed, atmospheric samples collected and analyzed... you know, Scientific Research that takes a hell of a lot more than just honk-scoop-point-wait.

We've got planets with ravines and valleys all over the galaxy that scream "carved by ancient water" - that could well have fossil beds of exo-fauna throughout them - but no means of searching this out.
We've spent countless hours flying upside down over planet surfaces scanning with our eyes for anything that looks unusual that turns out to be something other than the shadow of an oddly placed boulder, Yet we can track a scrap of ship hull composites from a few kilos with pinpoint accuracy.

There's so much that can and should be done to bring Exploration into focus it hurts.

Competely agree but we have to wait 12 months for 'maybe' this.

Im currently playing MAD MAX on PC at the moment and ive got to say the desert rocky enviroment in that game is spectacular... if only ED looked that way on surfaces.

To be fair, they mentioned there are more planet changes coming later in the year. And it would appear, at least from that one single demo, that what you see from space is pretty much what the planet will look like on the ground.

I think people are somehow expecting highly detailed gravel, rocks, and vastly different textures.. I don't know where this expectation has come from, but it certainly wasn't from anything they've said so far.

Me too. I have been holding back on major exploration trips for a long time. These new planets look totally awesome, and I’m liking how the colours directly relate to the material makeup of the planet/moon. ....very sciencey !
And this update just covers the rocky metallic worlds. We still have ice worlds to go....and maybe more.

Really? The close to the surface views? Didn't seem that different to me. But maybe it was my monitor with the stream.

As I said before though - sure it'll look better (for me) when it's me playing.

Regarding the ground level detail.... It would of been better if Ed landed in a full daylight spot, as it appeared a bit murky where he was. Still..I’m hoping for the best, fingers crossed.

So you didn't see the varied colours of the terrain. A check of your colour vision may be in order.

The base textures haven't changes, but they where good anyway, it was the varied colourization which made it stand out. Looked great and far better then what we have ever had before.

In fact I liked that half light part of planet he landed upon. Certainly showed that those aren't mere few shaders here and there.

Anyway, we will have tons of new videos by Friday morning :) Planet hunting shall raise again!

I saw some variations of beige and some whiter bits. As I say, I am sure it's just my monitor... My ocular vision is fine.

Imliked what i saw and i am lookingforward to take a closer look in VR tomorrow. Exploration will be much cooler from now on for sure.
