Because for the first time in this century, and since 1977 we will have a full moon on Christmas Day. The next one won't be until 2034.
Although at its best early this morning it will still look pretty full tonight.
So look up to the sky later and think....good old Flimley for letting us know.

The moon is also at its minor northern standstill, which occurs halfway through its 19-year cycle. The minor standstills aren't as noticeable as the major standstills, but they're still significant astronomical events.

Was looking at that moon last night. Pretty cool with the clouds and stuff.
Yep - I remember 1977 well. Very hot summer, only 3 TV channels, Abba and the like.
I was older than six but younger than 16. Can't remember what I got for Christmas at all. No idea but I was probably really excited.

I also remember that cheesy sci-fi flick but not the moon at Christmas.

I was 10 and rode my bike to the local movie house every weekend (sometimes more than once) for the entire release run. I was hooked! Still am too.

I remember '77! Street parties to celebrate Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee! Not sure we'd have anything like that any more (Health & Safety y'know).

And oh, that moon pic. We all see the moon pretty much every day, but whenever I look at detailed pics like that I can't help get goosebumps and just think .. "we've been there".
