Who says exploration isn't rewarded in ED

After starting this game last week and focusing on trading to get myself up to an ASP i went ahead and traveled to the edge of the currently available systems and started exploring ... below is an example of a 2-2.5 hour run of slowly visiting multiple star system which yielded ~440k CR (I've started getting better at knowing what to scan for)

Especially look at the prize on COL 285 SECTOR XR-H B11-5 144k CR!!
I couldn't find the system again as it's on the edge and navigation search wasn't giving me anything but I believe it was a binary system where I found a 100% Metal planet orbiting near the main star ... (didn't even scan the whole system just the first 3 metal high planets!)

Newest highest: 322k CR

Wow, nice payout :)

I have found the prices to be a lot higher more recently than when I first tried exploring.. from an average of 300-600cr to an average of 1500-3000cr now
Maybe I was just in the wrong system at the wrong time, or did FD adjust it?

Interesting, I think some of our more dedicated discovery commanders might be keeping this hush hush for obvious reasons, come gamma I might get my discoverer hat on.

2304

not sure exactly how prices are determined because I found a few other worlds with 'Metal Rich Planets' and most gave between 20k-60k now ... on the other hand found 2 systems with multiple earth planets ... result is 322k and 177k for those (I've made ~1.5 mil today just doing discovery; +another ~200k from mining some discovered metallic rings in new systems)

Overall I think time wise trading will still beat in pure CR/hour output ... but man exploration is more fun and it does pay!

Nice! I didn't have much luck when I tried exploring. Hardly made enough to cover fuel costs, so I'm very happy to hear this.

Explorers should have the chance (at least) to hit the jack pot if they find something extra ordinary.

I did some exploration yesterday, i got back with 500k in total ... but 195k came from one single system, the one i sold every data to...

The one at 91K has 3 earth-like planets.

After selling everything but one :

One Basic/Intermediate/Advanced Discovery Scanner at least. (this one needs to be used like a weapon, ranges are different between those 3)
But you can also use a Detailed Surface Scanner in addition(this doesnt replace the former).

The DSS scan is similar to what happens when you target a ship and look at it to get information and status. The difference is you have to do that with planets&stars and that you have to be close enough.
You can sill do that type of scan without the DSS, but you'll get less informations.

Well i'd thought they were pretty easy to find. I must have bought those at Gendini/Keling. (Intermediate Discovery Scanner + Detailed Surface Scanner = 750k Cr)

Thanks Nic. Looks like this might be a more interesting and lucrative profession than the others (subjectively speaking).

What kit (scanners?) is needed for this kind of role?

The main thing you need is the Detailed surface scanner (250k) and any discovery scanner

The discovery scanners place the planets orbits and make them targetable but if you use your eyeball you can usually find the closeby planets in the system; The detailed surface scanner finds the exact planet information.

Think the ranges are something like Basic~50Ls, Intermediate ~1000Ls, Advanced ~1mil Ls (furthest I've seen so far is ~300k Ls)

Basic scanner you get with any ship, Intermediate is 500k CR and advanced is 1.5mil CR

The reward mechanics are proportional to how early you are in discovering anything and selling it.

The first one selling discovery info about a new system etc will get the fattest rewards. I suspect those 190K ones mean you were actually the first player reporting that new info.

As other explorers come behind and discover/report the same system, they ll get much less Cr. than the first pioneer. I suspect the reward decrease formula for late comers is probably exponential.

So there is a clear STRONG incentive to boldly go FIRST to where no man has gone before.

I didnt know it was possible to bodly go "Second" to where no man has gone before ^^, well unless the first one was a woman :p

Hehe, you can indeed. The rational/lore for it is that you may be actually selling valuable confirmations of the data to the same or different interested factions. As more confirmations come through the less valuable they become.

True, i wonder though... has anyone been able to sell the same data to different factions ? It seems I have nothing left for the federation after selling to an independent system.

Just went to Krumine to see how much of a loss you get when scanning a system the 2nd time. I scanned the first 6 planets + moons, went back to Jungkurara and sold the data for 208k CR .... not sure how I'm getting more CR than the initial discoverer

Close enough ^^; maybe 15 players had the same idea before you did.

And by the way, i didnt even really eplore that one, not fully at least, i went right to the station, scanning planets near the star first, and only checking anything on my way, making perhaps one small detour, but that's it, i surely didnt expect that much.
