Sadly I only got into Frontier : Elite 2 after the shareware version came on the coverdisc of a magazine in the UK called "PC Utilities". I'd essentialy been given a junk PC system that didn't even have good enough system specs to run Win98, but I was able to get FE2 running on it.
A couple of months later the same magazine did First Encounters so I managed to get that working too, albeit not as well. When I was eventually able to upgrade that system to a good enough standard to run Win98se I managed to manipulate the boot-up so that both would work without fiddling about - but I didn't really get into FFE until JJFFE came out - which I still use more than FFE-D3D.
One thing I should note, however - is that I missed out on getting the CPC version of the original Elite on the covertape of Amstrad Action's 100th issue. I went into a local newsagent back then and was a couple of quid short of having the money for it. I went back 2 days later, and it was gone...
Long story short, I never got any of the box sets.
