Who the h*ll designs these stations....????

What sort of Onionhead addicted engineer was responsible for this abomination?

Just sayin'... :D

I've seen a few where the small pad is wedged right up against the medium, so you can't really approach it in a normal manner without getting warnings - or collisions! You either have to fly waay above it, then drop down blind; or fly in from the wrong side, and do a hand-brake turn onto the pad.

It's almost as if they're trying to make takeoff & landing more dangerous and challenging, or something. ;)

It is common for control towers to be located at a distance from signal corruption sources. If you want a listening tower to have a longer scan range, you'll isolate the receivers from periodic noise sources (e.g. engines, tools at repair facilities, etc) and white noise sources (e.g. ship computers, point defense computers, etc). This station design doesn't surprise me at all.

So they had to put it right in front of the landing pad, and could not move it 20 meters to the side? :p

I've seen a couple variations like the one the OP has posted. Another was an all-white research outpost/station that had a lab in a similar location.

I like it, reminds me of those stunt drivers who parallel park by sliding in using their handbrake, I try to emulate it with the python. It's the most non-combat piloting fun in the game.
Good times, good times.

10/10 for realism if you ask me. You see worse examples in real life and they also indeed signed by actual engineers. :p

Been to that outpost many times. La Tenha, Williams Dock, I suppose. Recognize that one in a million. The galaxy isn't as big as I thought.

P. S. Their restaurant is awful. Not recommended.

Here a screenshot of Williams Dock:

OK, so maybe the design team gave the mechanical job to the electrical engineer. He did well for signal isolation but sucked at industrial design!

Don't see the problem to be honest. If its serves its purpose. In space stuff needs to be functional first and foremost, not aesthetic. Though i agree that some things look kinda funny or strange at times.

I don't see the problem. You take off vertically from outposts, right?
That doesn't make the designs any less illogical. They're very illogical. There's no gameplay reason, nor any in-game fictional reason that makes sense for these terrible design decisions.
