Another thing is why you have to land in one specific direction. In my opinion you should be able to land at any direction as long as you land within the landing pad "circle".
The pad it self should just rotate you the right way on take-off.

The obstacles currently present are extremely artificial and a gamey shoehorn to add "challenge".
And can we quit assuming, that everyone who criticizes this can't figure out how to use lateral and horizontal maneuvering ?

Obstacles around landing pads are rubbish, end of.
The problem with this idea is that we cannot SEE below us, nor in many craft can we see to the sides (the Vulture jumps immediately to mind), and being in space there is a distinct lack of reference points we can see by which to align ourselves. And we are not given sufficiently precise instruments to align ourselves until very near the pad.
Um, no Dave, what I've done is have a bit of fun at the expense of an interesting design quirk in a station...

Personally I dock in various ways depending on the situation, usually whatever will be quickest.
