General / Off-Topic Who turned your head?

Ok, so lots of threads about where you first played Elite etc etc
This may belong in off-topic, mods feel free to move.

Not sure I have seen one about the game that turned your head. The one that took your attention with a flutter of eyelashes and a twinkle in their eye.

It never lasted of course but the obsession had moved on.

In my case I had an Electron and it was Repton 3 . A completely different game but one that with a level designer and sprite editor.
I could create my own themes and levels and I loved that. In those days it was pretty rare.

Elite didn't offer me any creative possibility in the game and despite shooting down thousands of pirates, never quite made it to Elite.

A while ago I found some of my old cassettes. Some are not in great shape. Of the ones I have digitized so far, the Repton levels are there but no Elite saves... I moved house since but hope to track them down again. Determined to know how close I got.

Denaris on the C64. Cool graphics and cool music.

I also was a fan of Turrican.

I had an Action Replay cartridge for the C64 which while it allowed you to modify games I never used it for that. It had a secondary purpose of allowing you to save the memory state to diskette (5 1/4) so you could save it mid level. Or you could load a game and while on the menu save it so you could get a 3 second load as opposed to the 3 minutes you had to wait for the tape to load.

WipeOut on the playstation was awesome. No other game up to that point had captured the sense of speed in a futuristic racer.

This really should be in the off topic group.

Turned your head = captured or enchanted you?

Back in the day it was Elite. And Ultima IV... And Civilization I. Later, Frontier: First Encounters and later Civilization games.

Theres been a few games where I went a bit OCD...

Amiga - Frontier:Elite II - The freedom, size and scope made a totally refreshing experience for me... It was me, but in the future
PSX - Final Fantasy VII - Excellent story with the ability to build you characters at your own pace, lot's of items to collect and extras quests which rewards with special rare items
PSII - GTA III - Freeroam, the ability to complete missions in your own way, I remember I had to sit on a roof and snipe a guy... I couldn't do it so after a while I jumped in a car and just ran him over!
Xbox 360 - Oblivion - I remember leaving the sewers and was amazed at the apparently living world that surrounded me

Moved to the more relevant section of the forum.

Personally for me it would be either the BBC game Strykers Run (interestingly created by Chris Roberts! who knew!) or Zarch (By Mr Braben). Two games that really made me sit up and take notice.

EDIT: actually I'd agree with FFVII - damn that was a great game, where is the spiritual successor to that one!?!?

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII on PS2
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII on PsP

I would like a proper sequel though, which carrys on from the end of FF7... with the 3 main characters and 6 new ones but appearances from the old 'extra' ones, using exactly the same mechanics (rather than this updated FF rubbish we get today) but in HD

Yeah I didn't think that they had quite the scope or the cohesion that FFVII had. I'm still waiting for Square to get back to the original awesome format for the series rather than the pants linear (albeit seriously pretty) stuff that they've been putting out.

EDIT: haha snap!

Oh and I think that it's also worth mentioning Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation - that was awesome as well. Snake? Snake!? Snaaaaaaaaaake....

My head is easily turned. I been a big fan of games ever since I saw my first Pong cabinet. There's been countless head turning moments for me but I guess the game that snapped my neck round fastest was DOOM. The fact it was shareware made me think it was going to be another Hunt-the-Wumpus game, until I pressed the forward button and the room rushed towards me.

Multiplayer LAN was a revelation as well.

A few games that turned my head.

Damocles (Amiga) Eliteish game.
Doom (PC) With you on that Frank.
Sabrewulf (Spectrum) Loved this game.
Knightlore (Spectrum) Isometric genius. I loved the way Sabreman changed into a werewolf.
GTA Vice city (PS2)

BBC B: The Original Elite: It's cliche on here but I played it endlessly for about 6 years and then moved onto Elite+ on the Acorn Archimedes

Civilisation I : I attended a computer show at ally pally in london where I got my 1st PC which was a 486 DX-33, I was 13 at the time this game had just come out, I was weighing it up with Sim City at the time and some stranger said Civ is probably one of the best games I've ever played I purchased it on his recomendation, I'd love to thank that person because I loved that game...

Quake : when I upgraded to the 1st pentium this was the game to play I never really got into doom but this was a game changer for me

America's Army : I actually went out and brought a new PC for this FREE game and installed broadband which was also my 1st real multiplayer experience and also the 1st time I became part of a clan lots of real good times and laughs playing this too many to mention (I hope E;D has the same sort of experience tbh)

Recently though there hasn't been that much that has made me go WOW and get really into a game, I've played a lot of console games a lot of sports sims recently, the grand theft auto games are all really good but they are completable within a very short space of time and when your done the sandbox really isn't that immersive to hold my attention for long........which is why I'm waiting for this new Elite, I did play Elite 2, but it was the original that had the wow factor for me even though Elite 2 and 1st encounters had some great innovations in themselves..............

Deadly, But very fluffy...
First..... Elite of course! wire frame addictiveness!

Second. Civ 1.....but 3 and 4 are great to! what's behind the next black squire, always one more turn after several hours playing!

Third.... PSX - Final Fantasy VII so good, so different!

Forth....Fallout 3 absolutely loved the 1950s Apocalypse theme, and total freedom to roam.

Elite + on the Arch? surely you mean ArcElite?

For me

Beeb-B Elite - I bought the Beeb to play it.

But the real Head Turner for me had to be Sentinel:rolleyes:

Very old school, but one of the first games I played that held my imagination and made me think, and replay a few times wasn't a graphical game at all, it was Infocom's Zork 1 and Starcross. Both games made me spend many hours playing through them and finally solving all the puzzles.

Sometimes you don't need graphics just a good imagination and story telling.

Well, I like speed, so Sonic the Hedgehog did a lot for me. Bearing in mind I'm only just older than he is, I don't have any 8-bit head turners (although I enjoy playing them, and still include a good number of them on my favourites list, they didn't wow me at the time I saw them because I'd already seen more impressive things).

Also Rollcage Stage II, although it's more fun at Mega Speed :D

Pretty much the reason I still own a PS1. That and Driver (+2), and Oddworld (both), and Rayman. But mostly Rollcage.

Your probably right I remember it being coloured in polygons I just assumed it was elite+ :D and not long after that frontier elite 2 came out

I had Repton 3 on the Electron too. I remember the designer thingy.
A mate and myself made a version of Repton where you had to collect the ingredients to skin-up.
The '80s. Those were the days!
The game that really got me into games though was the original Star-Trek game which I encountered on the TRS-80 in the '70s. Never looked back.
Real head-turney game? Probably Daggerfall = best game of the TES series so far.

The original game that made me escape into it was Elite, of course. That autumn day in 1985 sent me on a nearly 30 year (so far) journey into an ever-expanding universe that will probably never leave me until the day I die.

Second was Carrier Command. I found it immersive and engaging to float about and pilot my little ATV onto the islands, dodging boulders and fighters then take it over. The thrill when that enemy carrier appeared was awesome.

Third was Dreamweb - a gem of a game that was sadly underrated and was CRYING OUT to be made into a series, but that sadly never happened. Watching (and helping) Ryan achieve his destiny was engaging, sometimes shocking, sometimes drop dead funny and sometimes sad.

Fourth and probably last is LEGO Star Wars II - the original trilogy game. I replay this more often than any other game (because I can fit it into a quick session). The humour and gameplay are near-nigh perfect.

:)
