General / Off-Topic Who wants to watch me build a space colony?

If he listens? :)
That's up to him!
And I'm Hungarian.

About this project? I'm really interested in how it's turns out. Especially because?

When i was in High school our computer science teacher, given us as task to the end of year make 3 paints... In Windows paint. Instead of it i used W paint, and Photoshop. :p Yeah, i did what he said, but also over done it. The result? 4 A+ grade instead of 3 :D

How detailed my work was? Pixel art refined and completed with photo shop. And he is right now, in a somewhat similar situation.

Thanks, I think you have said you are Hungarian before. - that makes sense. I am eager to see where he goes with this and how he expands it. I myself work in photoshop for fun. I can draw anything, my signature line, for example, is my own photoshop painting. I especially love doing planet scapes. etc.

Bonus points and a tube of smarties for anyone who recognises the "inspiration" picture :).

At school I was told that we would unlikely invent any thing original so not to bother. Fortunately we never paid much attention so some of us did..

This is what model building used to mean...

When I was tiny, I used to collect the tokens on the backs of promotional packs of Frosties, so that I could send them off and get my free Thunderbirds die cast toys. My favourite was Thunderbird 2* but even back then I thought Thunderbird 3 had a certain futuristic elegance. Of course, I wasn't allowed to eat Frosties for every meal, so these tokens took a while for me to amass in sufficient quantities. Inventive young me took a pair of scissors, cut out the illustrations of the toys from the back, and played with the cardboard thunderbirds cutouts as a temporary substitute for the real thing, which I eventually got to the tune of one every 6-8 weeks. I ended up with two Thunderbird Ones, two Thunderbird Threes, one Thunderbird Two and one Thunderbird Four.

The Tracy Island playset was released that christmas, and it was that year's incredible must-have toy. I wanted one, oh I wanted one, and my parents tried, but by the time they got to the store to look for them, they'd all sold out. They tried several different stores, all the same story.

Being easily distracted, I got other cool stuff that must have pleased me as I don't remember my christmas suffering from a lack of Tracy Island playset...

Anyway, many years later, one of my friends is selling some of his old junk in a garage sale. What does he have for sale, but a beaten, slightly rough-round-the-edges but still fundamentally all there Tracy Island playset.

I was about 15 or 16 at the time, but I bought it (for about £4) all the same. I had no intention of playing with it, but I had always wanted to get my hands on one, so I suppose I was fulfilling a very small childhood dream.
I played with it for about long enough to see what all the buttons did, then put it in the attic, mission accomplished.
I think it's still up there, 15+ years later.

True story :D.

*Watching it get hit by a missile and crash land in a burning foam-covered mess in that one episode (they fixed it later) was a horrifying and painful experience for young me, I had much the same reaction as folks did watching the Enterprise explode in Star Trek 3, I imagine!

Oh yeah, sorry.

*Hands bonus points and a tube of smarties*.

Same there did it for a while for fun. Thinking about to use it again but, somehow i just don't have a reason good enough.

Anyhow a while ago i uploaded some of my older works.

That's sparkly stuff, Minonian!

RIGHT! My storage platform is finished, I've added a pumping/monitoring station and pipeline stack, and I've started moving into the Outpost aesthetic with the blue neon lights, which were a to get to work, but which I think work quite well.

Some moody lighting showing off the pipework and the blue neon.

A closeup of one of the auxiliary control platforms, with more detail of the gantries and the pipework.

The storage platform in its entirity.

The auxiliary playform again, this time with an accompanying martian atmosphere.

A nice view of the monitoring station and pipe stack.

So this bit is finished now. I wonder what I'm gonna move onto next :).

Okay, this is awesome. :) But i think you can do better.

Good job! How about a Launching pad, and the accompanying terminal next to this alongside with access road, sidewalk tubes? After / before that, i think it's time to make the colony, and industrial + storage area ground preparations alongside with some outline plans, even if they are only existing in your head. But wait with the additional details, such as pipe network sidewalk (rail)roads streetlights ects... Until it's finished. They are the last smoothing just like when you draw a picture.

Now, that's a good analogy if you making any kind of art, or work. major details, followed by the minor and finished with the fillings. You going to learn a lot change your approach, and ideas while you work so there is just no point to work on the smallest details until the main work is finished.

I'm glad you like it. Thanks fo the tips, but I should point out I've been doing this for 15 years. I know my way around a little concept and design ;). That said, all advice is appreciated, especially if I learn a new trick or two :). My strength is in modelling, I'm not much of a texture artist :p.
Next I might do some tubes for people to walk in, or maybe a second building, I was thinking maybe a solar plant or an agri-dome or something like that. :).

Bio dome, or solar panels? Well... That's necessary. About this? think it over, what's necessary in a colony, and no one given a tough previously, or how it can be done, in ways no one thought about it?

I've been busy working on ssignments and stuff but the due date for this project is getting closer, I have to have something in a presentable form even if it's not "finished".

It's a work in progress, this is close to what will be submitted, but I don't intend to stop working on it :).

Wewww, it's been a bit of a up and down ride.

Max started bluescreening my PC. Not crashing, actual bluescreening my pc .

A load of testing and finding the problem and it seems to have been corrupted settings files. Deleted and reset them to default and I finally got the program working again.

I created a communications tower for the Colony.

That speck at the bottom is a person. I may have got carried away with the size :p.

Then I threw some textures on it :D.

So it's nice and sparkly. So I put it in a scene! :D

Antennas need line of sight. Yes, I know .
