Hardware & Technical Why 4350 is in recommended specs given the fact that is a rather slow CPU

Hello to everybody,
I am building (slowly...except the case everything else would be 2nd/3rd hand used) an HTPC to play ED but i have this big question...
On the recommended specs it shows that is either "Intel Core i7 - 3770K or better / AMD FX 4350 or better"...i look at the passmark points and it looks that 4350 is about half the power of i7 and it makes thinking...
If i am going to play ED on my 40" TV Full HD which are the absolute least requirements to play smoothly ED...will downgrading to 720p make a great speed difference?

TIA

Going from 1080p to 720p? It probably will, yes. Are you sure you want to do that though, especially on a 40" TV? The visual downgrade will be noticeable.
Well, looks like the recommended CPU specs can be translated as "pretty much any CPU with at least four cores". The GPU is more likely to be the important component anyway.
Say, since you're planning a HTPC, I'm curious: what graphics card will you be putting in there?

Modern pentium CPU-s are not that bad, while officially quad core is required i am pretty sure ED will run good enough on one of those. The only problem is - there is no way to be 100% sure...
As for GTX750... at least 2Gb version runs ED decently at 1080P. Not ideal but definitely usable, like 40-60FPS with drops <60 usually happening in stations and on planets.

I guess this covers me just fine...thanks...

Playing at 720p gets the game working at acceptable framerates on my laptop:

i7-5500u (a dual-core ULV processor with hyperthreading, primarily intended for ultrabooks)
GTX960m
8GB DDRL3-1600

With dual-core processors, you will probably find the experience smooth most of the time, but conflict zones and RESes will be choppy with framerate drops. Games like physical execution cores.

The game runs flawlessly at 1080p on an i5-3570K and on an i7-2600K, both at stock speeds. If you're comfortable with buying used parts, you can build a pretty decent machine on the cheap.

I run an i7 2600 and it never gets stressed by Elite, has 16gb of memory, Samsung Evo SSD and an MSI GTX770 4GB, all settings either high or ultra (mostly) solid 60 fps at 1080p.

Edit - And that is with Slack, Discord, various Chrome tabs, EDDB, Voice Attack etc all running as well!

My experience with an i3 and GTX750ti 2gb is that CZs and RESes are always fine. It only ever gets a bit choppy when landing on a planet base. This is with default High settings at 1920 x 1200.

I don't know if I laugh or cry at my system...
Up to early last year I used to play on a Core2duo E7500 3Ghz on an Asus P5Q3 with 8GB ram and Radeon HD 5850.
I am now using the same MB and graphics card with a modded Xeon 5450 4 core also from the Core2Quad generation with 12GB ram.
Now compare with the first post http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5450-vs-Intel-Core-i3-4350 it's not far actually!
Plays fine for me, maybe graphics not top notch but I'm not running with the lowest settings for sure.

In fact I wonder what the real minimum is maybe I post a separate question as I would like to set up son's PC as he got an account and started playing. 9y of age and in Open!

I'm kind of on the same quest got most pieces except a video card. If you find any reference to a low power maybe low profile video card that can plan elite I would appreciate if you share details.

GTX750/750Ti that was discussed earlier is definitely low power (it even have no additional power connector) and there were low profile versions of it IIRC.
There is also GTX1050 which is newer and has LP versions too.

On both cards you should not expect "constant 60fps on ultra" and such, but they will run elite decently enough to be able to play comfortably, just be sure to avoid cards with less than 2Gb of memory.

I'd cry about the two years old drivers (and those were a beta version).

Indeed, been postponing an upgrade for long but with family expenses I've been postponing an expense that serves only myself.
But this or next year I'll move up a few notches :)

Still very playable though I don't complain about performance only I realise the texture graphics I get look somewhat less detailed than what I see in screenshots and you tube.

Thanks for the pointers GammaZ

ED is not very demanding regarding CPU, however try to run ARMA and you will see how it will demand power from the CPU.

I ran Elite on a GTX750 (1GB card) for quite some time and had no issues for the most part on high settings. Consistent 60FPS with dips to 58-59 in stations and landing on planets but very playable. In space everything was smooth.

Elite even ran on the GT 720 that came stock in the Dell machine i still run on now.

For the record I still have the GTX750 sitting boxed on a shelf (in the USA) waiting for a new home if anyone is interested.

Interesting info about 720
