Why almost every ship in the game should get an additional module slot.

Before horizons everything was fairly well balanced for most ships but then horizons introduced an additional module that many players would want to have on board, the vehicle hanger, a few of the smaller ships got an additional slot as they were now impossible to balance but the majority got nothing, for me this tipped the nice balance mainly on the medium size ships, i,m not suggesting a big slot be added just a size 1 or 2 for the medium class ships to offset the desire to carry SRV,s without having to leave another vital component off. long range explorers will best understand the problem. the same could be achieved by splitting a type 2 into 2 type one slots or having a ADS/DSS combo unit.
I,m curious how many other players have felt this problem and what solution you would prefer.

Also Fdev if in future you add more almost essential modules please think about how we players are going to be able to fit them in without additional slots. Personally i feel this was a big oversight in the horizons release.

Since I first started playing ED I've wished that the ads/dss were aditions to the core sensor module instead of wasting perfectly good internal module space.

Phone's have a lot to answer for, apparently.

Problem is with the stacking where while allowed, those who take the game far too seriously will stack the best stuff.
Nerf stacking (as in one only), thus allowing other options to gameplay and I'd be very cool with that.

I think SRV changes will be coming at some point, hopefully new types with better cargo and such.

I believe the stated reason is they like it awkward so you have to make choices and sacrifices.

I reckon DSS should be a utility mount device like a wake/cargo scanner - that way it's still a choice and sacrifice but when out exploring the SRV and hence the vast majority of Horizon's content in space (as in every single planet surface) isn't amongst the first things to go because you can't earn anything from it, while you can from the DSS. It also makes it a more player-interactive 'positive' process doing a Level 3 scan rather than Exactly identical experience to a Level 2 scan - you would feel like you did something.

But that's just taking away from the gameplay. Deny us a heatsink, make us agonise about point defence or chaff or what we have to lose to take the DSS - but please don't leave us constantly having to go "ah sod it, I just won't drive around at all for this month long voyage cos I'm damned if I'm earning that much less and losing jump range to take the SRV"

*grump* I dislike their decision. I like my SRV, and exploration does not pay very well.

I've pretty much always wanted more internal compartments for ships - but that's because I'm trying to make every ship I use multipurpose. Once I step back and look at a ship, it's easy to determine it's role in the game. Vultures and FDLs aren't the best choice for being a multipurpose ship, but they're great choices for combat ships. Type 9s have a ton of compartments, but that doesn't mean I'm going to put an SRV hanger in one. Pythons, Clippers, Anacondas, and Asps, for example though, do fit into that multipurpose role pretty well. You can arm them, put a cargo rack in, a fuel scoop, an SRV hanger, an FSD Interdictor and more in them, and do just about whatever you want. They won't be great at anything, but there good enough at most things to be perfectly usable.

That said, I do believe that every medium and large sized ship should have at least 5 utility mounts. If the medium classed FDL has 6, and why does the large classed Clipper only have 4? But again, that's probably the "multipurpose" coming out in me.

I always shake my head and laugh when I think about how both the Asp and DBX "Explorers" do not have (2) Class 1 slots for the scanners.

Perhaps the designers were never told that they were going to be used for exploration and would most likely be needing a DSS and an ADS.

Why FD? Why?

You'd think it a no brainer that each ship would have 2 class 1's std equipment. I'd even be happy if you could buy a combined Class 2 ADS/DSS for more than you'd pay for each separately.

Since any ship can run with NO scanners installed, I can't see how this would upset balance in any way.

Why FD?

Why?

How about an engineer who offered an upgrade to the core scanner module that added the functionality of:

  • Level 1: Basic discovery Scanner
  • Level 2: Intermediate Discovery Scanner
  • Level 3: Advanced Discovery Scanner
  • Level 4: Detailed Surface Scanner
  • Level 5: Reduced DSS scan time

It's because it's multi-role and it's as much about sacrifice as it is about making it work in other roles. You don't need these things when trade running.
It's also not a dedicated explorer, just one of the more viable for that role.
Next stage is to talk about the Anaconda as an explorer.

As for scanners, it depends on what you want your ship to be capable of.
An exploration ship outside the bubble with no scanners is pretty worthless.

Ship's aren't designed to make things easy, they are to make players make a choice on how they want to play the game and players need to make a decision.
If it was too easy, it would just be lost.

On a side note, I was hoping for better scanners, or maybe more focused scanners for planetary things and such but never happened. I did see a scanner pinpoint an area to find geological samples though which was really cool. Bring the right tools for the job to win.
Love to see more of that.

Perhaps adding a SRV only slot, instead of a size 1 or 2 slot that can fit anything, would be a compromise.

It actually makes more sense this way because the current method is you can add different size SRV bays with multiple scarabs based on the internal module slot size. HOWEVER, a ship with a deployable scarab would likely be very specifically designed to carry a set amount of buggies due to internal space limitations and configurations. Your Size 5 internal slot might be in the back, far away from the scarab bay... how would it transport the new buggie to the launch platform if it's separated by size 4 slots?

I'm actually surprised that it wasn't implemented this way, but perhaps it's something they will revisit in the future. In the meantime, it isn't really that big of a deal.

I wish the Basic Discovery Scanner would be integrated into every ship and the IDS, ADS and DSS should simply be additional hardware to extend its capabilites. Since ships like the Asp Scout and Diamondback series lack a class 1 compartment they could offer a class 2 module that combines IDS & DSS, and a class 3 that combines ADS & DSS. Anyone use the IDS btw?

But you'd be doing the multiroles a disservice by making everything else more multirole. The beauty of a python or asp is that while you can't turn like a vulture or fdl, you can do an incredibly diverse set of tasks with no need to re-outfit.

I made this suggestion in the suggestion forum over a year ago:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=206696&highlight=mengy

Basically my reasoning was because all of the other profession scanners are already utility slots, so why isn't the exploration scanner one too?

I am trying my hand at mining, so I can't have a basic scanner. Scanner or refinery. Not both. I can't leave off one mining laser because the scanner wont fit there.
So YEAH ............. programmers. Please, one basic slot extra for my Cobra.

The IDS is probably the worst selling module in the game, likely only used in the first week or two in the game, if that.

The other irony is that when you buy any ship, it comes with a BDS as standard equipment placed in the smallest slot no matter what size. Yet shipbuilders don't assign a class 1 slot for the job.

I do understand sacrifice, trade-offs and so on, contrary to posts suggesting otherwise, but certainly if every ship came with a BDS in a Class 1 slot I'd be hard pressed to think of a rationale for it upsetting the balance of the game.

To me it's just FD's penchant for irrational irritation added for no justifiable reason. Flying without a scanner of some sort is almost universal with perhaps hardcore PvP and Trading A-B routes being the exceptions. Surely, a single class 1 slot isn't going to make anything OP, especially if every ship has one.

But, who cares? I doubt FD values my opinions very much, if at all, anyway.
