Engineers Why am i Getting a Bounty for attacking a WANTED NPC?

Doing BH is becoming somewhat of a gamble in High RES. I have no way of knowing if a ship, which has a WANTED, attacking which will or won't give me a bounty! Its so much of a deterrance that I tend to stay outside of Mass Lock zone of the rings Just In case i hit this bug and have to escape quickly when the Feds turn their guns on me!
This is happening to me on attacking 10% of the WANTED NPC ships ! that 10% may look small - but its enough to cause a deterrance while bounty hunting - the gnawing thought all the ttime "is that WANTED ship really wanted? Let me take one shot at him so I don;t turn it into a Murder" over and over again!

Anyone else facing this?

Three possibilities, really:

1.) You attacked the NPC before you had the "Wanted" displayed in the lower left panel. While I find that game mechanic , it is what it is: you cannot start firing before either you are attacked ("Report crimes against me" must be on) or the scan on the NPC finishes.
2.) You did a KWS scan and found a bounty from another jurisdiction. However, as long as the NPC is clean in the current system, you will get wanted for assault.
3.) Bug

The bounty hunting mechanics in this game are appalling.
Did you KWS him ? its possible that he was clean in the system but had a bounty elsewhere. I know its dumb.
Also did you open fire before the scan finished ? again its dumb, i know.

Having said that Farming Wanted NPC's at a RES is not really bounty hunting anyway, I'd like to see them fix proper bounty hunting so that you actually have to track a target down and stalk them first.

I did a regular scan not KWS and fired only after i saw WANTED in red in my console.

Possible that you hit a clean ship with your fire?

Do you have a video?

sadly no! Its so random (again- the deterrance) that i cant expect to keep running my fraps continually in the hopes that it happens! Happens it does - i've heard this from others - but only pre-2.0! This seems to be a regression issue of sorts! Also - I ddint hit a random ship - the Warning clearly said BOUNTY 480 Cr added for attacking XYZ NPCS : XYZ being the WANTED npc I was trying to frag!

Sounds like a bug if what you describe is how it went, but you might be mistaken about how things happened.
I do a lot of bounty hunting. Never had that problem in thousands of kills.

What does happen since 2.1 is that some wanted ships do not give any bounty money after I kill them.
Happened 5 times so far.

Why would that be dumb? If someone is wanted in a system lightyears away does not mean he is also a criminal in the current system that most likely is ruled by an entirely different faction with different rules and perhaps is in the territory of a completely different major faction too.

This I think is a good mechanic as it adds variation and options for players too.

A kWS does not show someone as wanted in a system if he is not.

I would like to see a change in that mechanism too. Have been arguing for it for a long time.

That would be very cool. In Frontier Elite you had to follow a target, scan their wakes etc. and then kill them in a certain system. That was very exciting gameplay.

There's your proof! That there's the buggy NPC which has the WANTED status whose gave me the WANTED for firing on him ! Thats me running for my life before all those Green Feds turn their guns on my (took this 2 secs after the WANTED bounty and before the Feds turned RED)

There is a bug out there - I was about to make a report.

Some pirates while wanted in Supercruise are no longer wanted once stopped. Even if they fire on you first, they will never become wanted and if you retaliate you will get a bounty/become wanted. I've had this happen several times while stopping pirates from supercruise since 2.1 hit.

On another note - the wanted status in this situation will be bugged also and will drop.... that I can't tell exactly when but your status will clear after a few hours on it's own.

Bug entry - feel free to add your details to my post:
