Why are all the G5 Engineering in Colonia?

The Colonia Engineers have not always offered high grade modifications - the available level of modifications increased over time as modifications were carried out by players. There was a significant player effort to increase the grades offered, which started a little over five years ago:

G5: Life Support
G5: Refinery
G5: Fuel Scoop
G5: Auto Field-Maintenance Unit
Sure - but don't just look at the grade sticker, look at the actual benefits here.

G5: Refinery, Fuel Scoop, AFMU.
- these modules only have a single blueprint (Shielded) which increases integrity
- these modules function perfectly fine at 1% integrity so a reboot/repair will bring them back online in an emergency if they do somehow get destroyed
- when was the last time you ever heard of anyone losing any of those modules and it being important in the context of the state of the rest of their ship?

G5: Life Support
- keeping a few synthesis charges is far cheaper on materials than getting the reinforced/shielded blueprints to G5 (and as with the above three, a reboot/repair brings them back online anyway)
- life support is again rarely a module which takes critical damage in the first place (the canopy certainly can, though, and this blueprint won't help with that)
- for lightweight, the difference in the worst case (an Orca has the worst ratio between FSD size and LS size) between G4 and G5 Lightweight Life Support is 1.6t on a ship with a total mass of around 400t ... or 0.15 LY jump range.
- for the Mandalay the difference is just 0.07 LY (and all other common exploration ships are less weight-sensitive)
- anyone who finds that sort of tiny difference in jump range at all noticeable isn't going to have trouble travelling to Colonia

G4: SCB
- compared with the G3, rapid charge gets you another 0.5 seconds taken off your spin-up time (at the cost of slightly less actual reinforcement). This one is just about theoretically useful, if you're in a PvP fight with someone who has Feedback Cascade Rails and time-on-target abilities which are very good but not perfect so that half-second difference at least sometimes matters (they can't hit you in 3 seconds but can in 3.5).
- compared with the G3, specialised gets you an extra 2% shield reinforcement and an unimportant thermal load reduction. In the best case - an 8B SCB - this gives you an extra 132 shield MJ on SCBs giving out more than 6000 MJ on top of a base shield of likely similar size. That again, might be important if you're in a PvP fight versus someone who extremely closely matches you in skill but doesn't have any Feedback Cascade Rails ... but is going to be irrelevant in any other case.

These are niche (often to the point of actual uselessness) blueprints, and having to think "is it actually worth going 22000 LY" might save you some unnecessary material costs.

I don't see the point of this post ?
You don't have to engineer if you dont want?
If you want that engineering well then I'm afraid you have to go to colonia.
Fdev have placed restrictions on many engineers so that you have to do stuff rares, mining, hacking etc this is just another way for those folk who wish to make the effort to go to colonia and give them something extra for the distance .
There are now regular FC to colonia so you don't even have to jump . Load your ship up and wake up in colonia.
However how you play the game is totally up to you and doesn't affect me or anyone else .
And you can still play the game if you choose not to go to colonia .

In Colonia, it is not the ship engineers that are the best, it is the Ody engineers for suits and weapons. Only 4, very modest unlock requirements. Worth going to Colonia just for that.

Currently have an alt on one of the regular FC taxis to Colonia. I might now engineer some modules when I get there, just because I can.

Add to that
G5: Life Support
G3 lightweight is available in the bubble*
G5: Refinery
Hadn’t even noticed it could be engineered.
G5: Fuel Scoop
Only integrity available so why bother*
G5: Auto Field-Maintenance Unit
Another module that I use rarely enough that I wasn’t aware it could be engineered.

SCBs are another module I don’t bother with but like all the others here I am sure that they can be engineered to a useful degree of benefit if not to the point of diminishing returns represented by G5.

*See @Ian Doncaster post above for a more complete and factual comment.

As to why these few items are G5 at Colonia it is because the commanders there put in the effort as was done later on to train up Chloe over in the WitchHead.
