Newcomer / Intro Why are all the ships named for snakes?

In the original 1984 game all the human ships were named after snakes with a couple of exceptions (those being the Gecko and the Moray). The Moray was named after an eel as it was officially developed as a dual purpose spaceship/submarine.
The Gecko was never really explained why it was an exception, just that it was a small, fast fighter.
The Python, Anaconda and Boa were the big ships in the original game, and the Fer-de-Lance was the deadliest of the NPC human ships, usually flown by elite bounty hunters.

There was never any real explanation for the snake theme but it was just an accepted fact of life that humans named their ship designs after snakes, and that the name in question usually reflected either the size or the lethality of that design.

(Did you know that a Fer-de-Lance is a snake - don't ask me why there was a Gecko though.)

This brings back so much memory...endless days, summer nights...way ahead of it's time back then!

Yup, start a new thread-- get scolded for starting "yet another thread" on X topic.
Add to an old thread-- get scolded for necroposting.

You can't win the internet.

If the necromancer had a relevant point to make then fair enough - but just to make a daft attempt at a joke four years later deserves it. The post following the necro was just an innocent victim.

Sense of humour failures are also prevalent on the interwebthingie.
