Why are certain equipment so nonsensically power-hungry?

Like... how on Earth do you make a missile launcher or kill warrant scanner that uses nearly five times the power of a weaponized laser? :S

That video will get you from 9 to 19% over your capacity depending on the ship in question if you really want to push it :)

There's also no negatives in it. Serious mate, if your having power supply issues, or sacrificing anything cause of that dreaded MW limit, that's why I made the video! 12 minutes, problem sorted.

Oh, this isn't really anything about me having power issues (though thanks for the advice!), but just how ridiculous some of the equipment stats strike me from a logical point of view. The KWS has to be the most egregious one, definitely: 4.7x the power consumption of weapons-grade laser, for 2km extra range. :p

A laser only has make a narrow beam that is only good for a few kilometers, maybe a kill-warrant scanner is sending a wide beam orders of magnitude further through hyperspace to check databases beyond your current star system? A kill-warrent scanner might actually contain a mini-hyperspace-drive, and spaceship engineers are amazed at how little energy it uses to get the job done.

But to be Captain Obvious: better gameplay and balance is generally more important than better trivia. A kill warrant scanner can be used to bring a player a lot of money. Ship equipment that brings in a lot of money should also bring some kind of significant trade-off to the ship, else there is no reason to be selective and carefully specialize your ship loadout, then half the fun of the game would vanish, and then no-one would complain about the trivia any more because no-one would be playing the game :D
