why are most systems already discovered?

discovery scanner only works in like 10% of new systems i travel too... "that I have never been to"

what is the reasoning behind this?

You need to get out more :) Not being rude - you must still be in the core. Well populated, long established systems are in your galmap database to begin with. In some cases you won't have all the data, in others you can see everything, but the payout will be comparatively low. If you get out to where all the systems are grey that's when exploring starts to pay off.

thanks man.. yeah I need to get out more. I am still stuck in the pill! lol.

A great way to figure out where everything worth exploring is, is to set your galactic map to map in the view tab. Green dots are independent, blue dots federal, red dots imperial. You'll quickly figure out the best direction to head in for some actual exploration.

This technique is also good for finding your way back to sell your data :)

I *think* that you get a better return on discovery if you play Solo. But that's a theory I have, no actual evidence.

Hey Zaratan,

can you elaborate on this please? are you saying this only because grey ones are the best to go to? how do these colors help me get back to my sell data?

For The First Great Expedition (TFGE) I am on my way to EZ Orionis (that big red circular cloud you can see in the sky) and believe me ... it'll stop. I am at the edge of civilization now. Behind me green and blue worlds (Independends and Federation) I am at the last Independend outpost and before me lies a big pool of grey unexplored stars... over 1000LY before I reach my goal...
When I get back with all my scan data...IF I get back... that will be my hayday!

Ow when in the Galaxy map you have 4 tabs in the left menu.
Info - Navigation - View- Options
.
If you go to the 3rd (VIEW) you have 2 options:
REALISTIC - MAP
.
If you select MAP... all the stars get a color.
Now just under that section there is a part that explains the colors (Grey = unknown, Green = Independend, Blue = Federation, Red = Imperial)
The checkboxes can be used to turn certain types of systems on/off.

That is just crazy! so you have to come back 1000LY just to turn in your exploration? well I guess that makes sense if there are 450,000,000,000 star systems... I seriously will say it again:

Unpopulated (or grey) systems are usually unexplored as far as your ships records go. You'll notice a significant leap in the amount you can sell scan data for if you're the first person to sell data for that system (from 1-2000 to tens of thousands).

Obviously the closer to populated systems you are the more likely someone will have explored and sold the data, but it's a big area with lots of star systems so a few close ones will still be unexplored.

Personally I find it ridiculous to find 'unknown' stars and planets in areas of the galaxy that are so heavily populated that they have multiple stations. Sure I could buy data for those not in my database but the idea that I can make thousands of credits for returning data for already populated system?

It makes no sense to me in the populated areas, so is this just content padding until release or is this really the true game mechanic? PLUS what happened to 'racing back with the data' I don't honestly think that I was the first player to scan the system next to the starter position.

I believe playing Solo we have systems discovered already by other players as well, right? That's how this game works...alive all of the time.

Those systems are unknown to YOU not necessarily others. That is why we can buy and sell exploration data. You can still sell data of previously scanned systems even if others have handed in data before. You'll just get less money for it. Your data is in these cases considered good for verifying previous scans by others, but obviously not worth as much as the first scan handed in.

Just as an e.g.: I had a system yesterday not too far from where I started my trip so still deep into well known space for which I got 36.000 Cr. I think I sold the system data in either the SAME system or a neighbouring system.
You'd think they'd know about it. Both systems were inhabited.

It's crazy yes... crazy fun!
:D

I am in no rush to get to the end of the universe what happens when you rush and see everything like those other games where people rush and level up too fast - when you get to the end then what if you have seen everything?

Well it still makes sense selling data to the same system. The data you provide is new and updated, so it will still be worth something to the buyers.

Seen everything? Not happening in your lifetime. Way too many variables, besides, the platform is open for the dev's to keep adding stuff. The mind is truely the limit

If believing that works for you then I'm happy for you. :)
