Newcomer / Intro Why Are Other Ships Crazy Bright in Supercruise?

Other ships are like super-crazy bright fireflies when they travel in supercruise. So bright they often obscure whatever I am flying towards.

But when I look at my ship using external cameras its not super bright. And I don't have a big comet tail streaking behind me. Why is that?

1. In Odyssey these "tails" are not so problematic (in fact they are naff ;) ) - I prefer the Horizons comet tails to the blurred glow in Oddy (they do show as tails close in iirc).

2. I have never been able to see my own SC tail / wake / turbulence but I remember seeing on a community manager's livestream yonks ago that their ship did show the (an) effect.

You don't see your comet tail, 'coz you're flying faster than light. ;)

I actually think they should expand on that. For example - ships flying towards you should be blue-shifted and flying away from you red-shifted.
Also, our cockpit glazing has some amazing light-enhancing and light-damping capabilities. The fact you can look at a star from really close up and don't turn into ash tells me it's not actually glass we're seeing things through..

I think the entire idea of seeing other ships, that are flying faster than the speed of light, is a bit problematic... If the ship is anywhere further from you, then let's say one LS, then the ship, traveling faster than light is in a completely different location even before the light reaches your ships sensors, who then instruct your canopy enhanced artificial reality projector, to project that ship for you on your canopy...

And yes, the canopy clearly cannot be glass, but I like how the coders who coded the canopy enhanced artificial reality projector, included the smudges on the "glass" so that your mind really believes you are looking through a regular glass...

I thought this had something to do with stray molecules in space hitting the front of the ship when moving at super cruise speeds?

But I can see my ship using external cam? 🤷‍♂️
Yes but...

When we travel in supercruise our ships warp space about themselves to get around the nothing can go faster than light problem that Einstein invented, the external camera is inside that warp bubble with us which is why our ship looks normal. The comet tail if it is not an effect of what we are using to see with will be outside the bubble.

So I can see my ship along with lighting effects & shadows from nearby star.... but not the crazy bright halo surounding my ship... because I am traveling faster than light in supercruise. Even when I do a u-turn or bring my ship to a supercruise stop? Ha ha! (ya I know, its all for a fun game).

Edit: Also I don't see my ship's crazy bright halo or comet tail off in the distance from where I was traveling from. If its a time/distance lagging concept I should see it off in the distance when I make a u-turn.Yes it might look stupid in the game though. Ya ya, its just a fun star-trek style game.🙂

Wait until you hear "No gravity. Magnetic contact active."

It really shows how sloppy the developers are. The outpost pads clearly say ZERO GRAVITY but the moaning minnie voice says "no gravity" and to me it sounds like she is saying "low gravity" - it really should be clear by saying "zero gravity". Still, there isn't any footy-shooty action there so the devs don't care about this area.

I initially heard "low gravity," too. Probably because of the SRV warning, which does say "low gravity." But the more I hear it in Odyssey, it does sound like "no gravity." But you're not wrong. It should say "zero."

Also, I want to buy a magnetic pizza box.

Wouldn't the correct phrase be "Micro-gravity"?

Or the NPCs. They might not be the brightest bunch. In that regard its kinda realistic and I like it. How often do they spill biowaste? Why are they blowing up spaceships inside their own docking bay? Why are they allowing known criminals to land in their spaceport? Why is there a blackmarket trader openly doing busines at major spaceports? Why do so many npc's flock to a life of piracy when its obviously an awful non-profitable profession for them (seriously? you are gonna risk your 1M+ credit spaceship to fight me for some crappy cargo? After you just saw me blow up your buddy?)

Edit: Which brings up another funny point. If baddies can get mission info on what I'm carrying so easily, why can't they also get info on the quantity of pirates that I have recently blown up?

The people who have that information aren’t corrupt enough to sell it, or they want more money for it than the baddies will pay.

I might be wrong but I thought orbital platforms were in geostationary (bodystationary?) orbits - i.e. circular orbits, where the gravitation force on a body is matched by the centripetal force from the orbit and so in effect there will be no force of gravity experienced. Hence the signs saying "ZERO GRAVITY".

If something is in stable orbit, then it is for all practical purposes in free fall. The micro-gravity being close enough to zero that it could be called just that.
