Why are PC and Xboxers segregated?

This isn't a complaint or comment - just a question, as I don't understand the technical reasons. I gather that we will all eventually be sharing the same background universe, but that Xbox and PC players will not meet. Why is that?

Official reason seems to be that MS's patch process would delay patches for PC and Mac.

Unofficial reason people joke is that xboxers would get their derriers kicks by PC users with HOTAS setups and MS doesn't want their players to feel bad.

Not sure we have seen official confirmation though on that... someone else might be able to post a link to an official statement on the topic.

I think this ^. Warframe is in a similar situation, crossplay was going to be a thing but they didn't want to delay the patches due to the cert process.

A shame, more players to inject more life into open would have been nice.

I'm hoping that the CQC for the PC will be a separate module that doesn't affect the patching of the main game. That would allow all players to meet in a theatre of conflict.

I don't like the whole business model around consoles as a whole, limitations in hardware use and upgrade as well as forced to be doing business with the console producer and everyone else excluded. I'm officially not allowed to modify anything and that what i generally like about PC's being a technician knowing how things work. Another thing is about myself being in control of my own device security instead of someone else that i have never seen before or will ever know determine what is secure for me or not while that person has no clue who i am, what i want or what i need. At the same time this type of security allows 3rd party's to roam free and mine meta data how they see fit by paying the console producers for it. The main reason while the market of mobile OS's is completely rotten from the inside out. Most apps these days are pretty much designed to do different things in the background instead of being what is 'sold' to you. Ignorance is bliss isn't it.

It means CQC updates would have to be delayed anyway... Wait'n see.

Also, Xbox players need a gold account to play in Open, doesn't it mean that Xbox Live servers are being used ? If so, MS probably doesn't want us pesky PC players to use their servers for free...

Isn't the xbox version still in beta? IIRC we will all be together once it is deemed ready for formal retail release. Could be wrong ...

We will share the same galactic background (Powerplay, markets etc...) but you won't be able to directly interact with an Xbox player.

Have you seen an official statement of that? The last one I saw said that FD were still hoping to make it happen (but sounding like that was unlikely), not that they had given up on trying.

Which as far as i'm concerned is a fatal flaw of the game.

It should revolve around players interacting with eachother. Directly.

Not just being ghosts in the same machine.

Nothing to do with it on that last sentence, Frontier didn't change their multiplayer netcode on Xbox to use a client-server for Microsoft servers, I highly doubt that, Basically, Xbox players will be paying for Elite: Dangerous open mode for what essentially is a free service. E.G. Peer to Peer.

To answer OP, basically you have to jump through more hoops to get a patch out on an Xbox, thus patching on Xbox is delayed, so if Cross play was enforced then us PC and Mac players would have to wait too, Frontier wants to avoid this.

However, Braben did hint for the future that Once Elite has been matured/aged enough and is spread out across all platforms and thus needs fewer updates in-between crossplay would eventually be brought into discussion.

I believe FD have not completely closed the book on this happening, however my understanding is it is as much down to microsoft as anything. MS toyed with cross platform gaming on pc a few years back with shadowrun but due to pad limits the console guys got spanked every time.

Now, officially MS claim they didnt stop it
http://www.techhive.com/article/203559/answered_did_microsoft_kill_cross_platform_play.html

but that being said, this is not what i heard from other devs who investigated it.... and they claimed that Sony are way more interested in cross platform gaming (see warthunder, portal 2 and some others).

Now with windows 10 MS seem to be pushing gaming on pc a little more again, I just hope it does not become the mess that was GFWL!. Maybe, esp now sony are spanking them, both in sales and in technology, MS will start to encourage this sort of thing again. My money however is on if you want cross platform gaming with console mates, the safe(r) money would be on the PS4 version when/if that comes.

This is a generalism before someone points out they play console and this doesn't apply to them.

Console players are after mainly instant action and quick rewards.

There are very very few console games that involve the player to play for hundreds of hours to achieve the top "stuff".
Not that they wont play for hundreds of hours but they don't generally want to work up to having all the shiny bits.

For the Xbox version of ED to work, it had to open with QCQ and make it as much like Call of Duty with spaceships as possible.
Space elevators, Power ups etc.

I would be generally surprised if many of the players go past CQC part, to invest the amount of time to play the rest of the game like a PC Player does.

To combat that, I expect most of the main game rewards will be much faster and easier to achieve.

*Gimbled Pulse Unlocked* High Five
*Docking Achievement* High Five
*20 Witchspace jumps Achievement* High Five
