Why are so many people afraid of us?

Unfortunately you've made the mistake of assuming that just because you could acquire credits etc so quickly that everyone is able to. Sure, technically if they adopt the same tactics as you or play your particular style of play or have the same level of skill as you claim to, the game makes it possible for them to - but not everyone plays the style of game you do. Not everyone will adopt the same tactics. Not everyone has the same skill level. One of the things that really annoys me personally is this sort of "I can do it so anyone must be able to" mentality - quite apart from the style of gameplay differences between people, you claim it is too easy - but did you ever get off your pedestal long enough to realise that not everyone is finding it easy? And that's presently complicated by the hackers and jerks to boot. It is very true though that things as they stand are far from indicative of what the released version will be like, given we're so restricted in where we can go, trade etc. Boasting about how 'easy' you've found it though and throwing in the faces of those having issues though is pretty lame....in my opinion.

For my part it's not the dying that I have an issue with. It's a multiplayer environment and I expect to die - from NPCs and PCs alike. What I have issues with is some of the holier than thou attitudes of certain pvp zealots who want things their way and no other (not all pvp'ers are jerks thank god - in fact in my experience the majority are pretty good people - but then that's always the way, with the minority tarnishing the rest). Some might say that's life, get over it.....I say it doesn't have to be and we can be better than that.

Brother/Sister, you said a lot of words there. The thing is... we are in a really small game right now with some very finite rules.

If you don't want to play the way that will get you the most stuff quickly... that's on you. However, don't act like you couldn't figure it out pretty easy. It's clear that you have the where for all to read forums, and the interest to pursue the knowledge.

If you just want to test the game for its own sake... great! But if you want to advance to a better ship, all you have to do is figure it out.

I dont choose not to mug old ladies simply because it is against the law and I may get in trouble if I get caught

Seriously? There are so many ways to avoid being caught!

Like, dress up as Batman, but without the pants, and sing "Seventy-Six Trombones" in a Russian accent.

As long as you change costumes, songs and accents regularly, the police will put it all down to dementia, trust me.

On a tangential note, there was an interesting article in Wired magazine a while back touching this rather sensitive matter regarding the lack of accountability in games:

Why Online Games Make Players Act Like Psychopaths

Absent a sense of empathy, you’re free to rob and kill at will. What we do with this reveals something about us. Jon Ronson, author of The Psychopath Test, says imagining ourselves doing something horrible is a way to see ourselves in a new light. “One of the ways we keep ourselves moral is to imagine the terrible things we could do, but then don’t do,” Ronson says. “You stand on a train platform and think, ‘I could push that person in front of the train.’ That thought pops into your head, and it doesn’t make you a lunatic. It makes you a good person, because what you’re actually saying is, ‘Oh my god, I’m capable of doing a terrible thing, but I would never actually do it.’

...You can't start to make a judgment on how we interact with each other before we can communicate. Communication will come in beta (SOON) until then, you're talking about the worst part of human nature.

I beg to differ. Your actions are your true communication.

It's not what you say, but what you do, that defines a man.

I couldn't disagree more. If we all lived in a world where we were lethally dangerous, but couldn't communicate our intentions, everyone would assume that we have the worst on our minds.

I'd just be interested to know who the "us" are in the thread title. OP, do you speak for some group. Please let me know so I can avoid them in future! ;)

I'm speechless...

We obviously live in different worlds. No point in trying to debate it.

Fly safe Commander.

My intent was: Why are people afraid of US.

When I say "Us" I mean whomever plays Elite. It seems like so many folks are afraid of 'griefers' that they're defeating their own purpose.

By being so scared, they're making it worse.
