I am stuck going back and forth to the same sectors because I can't make it to certain destinations because the line is dashed (A - - - - - - - - B) in the galaxy map. Is this because my ship can't travel to them? I am using the stock sidewinder.
dashed lines indicate they are beyond your current jump distance, you can increase your range a little by decreasing the mass of your ship if required. carrying no cargo &/or selling the laser will give you a little more range, the same with the shield generator as each adds mass.

2) upgrade your FSD (Frame Shift Drive).... just note that NOT all upgrades have a positive (+) effect on range (laden or unladen)... watch out for the red (-) or blue (+) values in the outfitting section when u select a item
Dashed orange when you plot a route means you need to refuel (so you can make the route, but not on one tank.) Dashed blue means it is outwith the weight, eg cargo that you are carrying, but is within the range of your ship without the cargo.
