Why are the imperials so nice to me?

Every time I go to an imperial station the space traffic controllers always say that I am welcomed there even though I am not aligned with them, should I be worried?

If you keep coming (and fork over a couple million now and again) they even make you knight, duke, king etc.

And then they will sell you their not very effective, but very fast and beautiful ships -

they are really very nice on a personal level
