Why are there no nuclear weapons in Elite?

There is nuclear weapon in elite, its called the corvette, cutters run from it and other ships just stop and look at its beauty.[haha]

As mentioned, nukes aren't nearly as effective or targeted well in space. And using nuclear bombs seems to be generally outlawed or too controversial for use in most all inter-faction warfare. Interestingly, the ED verse in 3304 hasn't reached the Star Trek tech of photon torpedoes , basically anti-matter torpedoes where somehow they can come up with abundant anti-matter to use.

Lasers (and plasma accelerators) are basically your nuke energy from your ship's nuclear fusion powerplant transformed and redirected.

I remember the "Rockford Legal Academy" mission too where the Fed navy supplied you with a fission bomb. If you recall in FE2 & FFE, it was illegal to dump radioactive waste in livable areas, where part of the game was to manage the radioactive waste if you used a military fission drive.

I read that it is said that the problem is the effectiveness of the nuclear explosion in the vacuum, but Ed is science fiction and already there are missiles and torpedoes that explode and damage effectively

Given the absolutely abyssmal engagement ranges in ED yeah it really isn't a problem to say... nuke an entire combat zone. Nukes being "ineffective" in a vacuum is relative to nukes in a atmosphere, and its not a thing with just Nuclear weapons, but explosives in general.

Nova bombs? Energy bombs.

From the original manual:

ENERGY BOMBS
An energy bomb will be offered for sale at a planet of Tech level 7 or higher, and can be used only once. It is activated by the TAB key and will destroy all other ships, asteroids, and missiles in the vicinity.
Energy Bomb Specification: Medusa Pandora Self Homing Energy Bomb (available at Tech Level 7 worlds or higher) is a tactical weapon capable of Megazon Destruct Force 13. Has heat radius of 900 km. Developed by Klaus-Kline laboratories for multi- role combat using "launch-and-leave" techniques.

Babylon 5 : In The Beginning - the destruction of the Black Star
Babylon 5 Series - the attack on Corianis IV where Sheridan sets up nuclear bomb mine field to get the attention of the Shadows and the Vorlons

Thermo-nuclear weapons are effectively mini-suns - detonate a suitable yield at a suitable range and they should be effective to at least some degree.

Surprised no one bought up one of the effects of a nuclear device - EMP. So unless your ship has it's full suite of anything electronic or electrical hardened, whilst a nuke going off near you might not destroy your ship, you might find said ship a very quite and dark place afterwards :D

Nice references :) I think both of those were set up in minefields or asteroid belts (been a while since I saw those)? I think that's the key there, the shockwave would propogate through the asteroidal dust, chunks of rock would get carried along, asteroids smashed. You'd essentially be creating a titanic wave of fast moving debris. I imagine that would be fairly horiffic to experience!

If we can fly through really near suns I suspect our ships are hardened against normal EMP blasts to some degree (of course the Thargoid shutdown field seems to be an EMP, so maybe not?!!)

I do not believe that is the case where B5 is concerned - from the looks of the Corianis 6 Battle the Asteroids were merely staging points to either mask the nuke's presence OR (more likely) to act as visual reference points for manual detonation of the nukes.

In the cases of both the Black Star and Corianis 6, Thermo-nuclear warheads/bombs/mines with yields significant enough to notionally vaporise the asteroids they were on would appear to have been used.
