Why are we still arguing about open v solo, ganking, griefing, etc.?

After 2 years I'm still reading threads debating the pros and cons of open v solo. Most often the debate focuses around ganking and griefing. Why? It's so frustrating to read the same thing over and over with the same complaint.

ED is a MMO. Open should be the jewel in the crown. Discouraging players from playing in open for any reason is just dumb. It doesn't matter why they play solo, just that they do. If we want a vibrant MMO community, then we should not be discouraging players from playing in open. If you are a ganker, griefer or just see yourself as a player who likes killing other players because the game allows it, then just think twice. If the P v P seems like an unfair match, then it probably is. This would be big first step in getting players back into open.

If killing other players is your thing, then there are easy ways to do this without ruffling feathers:

- Join a P v P group.
- Invite friends for matches.
- Find players who want consensual P v P (with report crimes off).
- Stick to players who are "wanted" (we all know the risks of being wanted).
- Give Power play a shot (custom made reservation for hunters and prey).

If you P v P with players who are ready to take you on, then not only will it be more fun if you win, but even if you don't you will probably take something away from the experience and be a better (more skilled) player because of the experience.

But.. It's not an MMO. Open is instanced and unless I go to a CG system or one of the popular places... I very rarely see anyone. If this were truly an MMO, open play wouldn't be instanced and we'd see more people.

Griefers gotta grief.
Can't explain their what's in their minds. They obviously get some sort of kick out of it.
All MMOs have them unfortunately.

The problem is that NPCs are too weak and have crappy builds. We all get spammed by the bots looking for tasty cargo but they are so easy to kill or evade that players get comfortable with a low level of difficulty. In a space ship game where people strap guns to their ship and bumble around we still have complaints about humans doing what NPCs already do. The players are just so much better at it they get called griefers. Seal clubbing is a problem and should be called what it is but it's really not hard to avoid once you are aware of the hot spots. A major contributor to the problem is how weak weapons are. The guns are so weak, even with engineering that 2 fully grade 5 combat ships can run out of ammo or fight for 40 minutes before one loses. The defenses are out of proportion with the weapons so badly that the "meta" is to build a punching bag for a ship and cruise around. A T9 has 5 guns but might as well have none because this problem is so bad. In RL an MMA fighter could try robbing an old lady and still lose if she is armed but not in elite.

You've made some false assumptions.

ED is a MMO.
It is not. It is a single player game with the ability of other players joining your game slapped in.

Open should be the jewel in the crown.
Instead, it's a turd on the ground.

- Join a P v P group.
Griefers already do that... to hunt people...

- Invite friends for matches.
Griefers already do that too... to get better at greifing.

- Find players who want consensual P v P (with report crimes off).
See above.

- Stick to players who are "wanted" (we all know the risks of being wanted).
See above.

- Give Power play a shot (custom made reservation for hunters and prey).
How do you think they got the packhounds they use to grief with?

If you P v P with players who are ready to take you on, then not only will it be more fun if you win
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Griefers NEVER do that! It's not 'fun' for them unless their victim is incapable of defending themselves.

So. Much. Salt. I need to make some popcorn for it, or a baked potato, something.

I am not a huge pvper, but I have an issue with calling anyone who wants to do so a "griefer". It's this carebear mentality that makes me have zero pity for those types in mmos. I don't understand the entitlement people have when they play a game that allows PvP... And then are shocked, and angry when someone kills them, and immediately break out the pitchforks and demand the game that was advertised with PvP, be changed to suit them.

You'd have to be some special kind of naive to not expect sociopathic behavior in a game that allows people to attack and kill others.

Because this....

Umm. You must have not been around for the 2.1 super npc's.

It's the ruffling feathers that they want, they get enjoyment out of others misery no matter how they try and put a spin on it.

Actually, I don't even think about the person on the other end, for me it's the rush and challenge of defeating a player character. You can't get that by blowing up rats.

Sometimes, it really isn't that personal.

By the way, piracy has been a way of life for many in both the material and immaterial worlds for as long as people have existed. Personally, I don't prey on people who can't defend themselves, but again.... Open play was advertised as having PvP. It's the risk you take playing it, and as such, the rewards (power play modules) are greater.

It makes the world go round. I dont read a lot of them anymore as they might as well be copy and paste off any of the ones thats come before. But some of them are good for a laugh.
