Horizons Why are you able to FSD off the planets surface?

I will admit to having little to no knowledge of the game mechanics and or background in exactly what the FSD does as opposed to hyperspace from other sci fi-esque fantasy.

Something that has always bothered me since the release of Horizons has been the fact that you enter orbit around the planet you leave super cruise and glide down. This part I can grasp...what bothers me is when you leave a port on the planet surface you fly up a couple thousand feet lose mass lock and can immediately jump not just into super cruise but you can engage the hyper drive and leave that star system in the dust.

Maybe this bends my own preconceived notions of hyperspace travel, but I would like to know why its possible to jump directly off the planet without any intermediary steps.

Anyway, I figured I would write this here and maybe someone else has an explanation. Maybe its more of an ease of use thing where people would be upset if they first had to get up on high and then super cruise away from the planet then jump to the next system.

Thanks,

So you waste even less time playing the game...

Really, I rather do something else than spend more time flying in system. Of course I expect to hear from the "Breaks my mersion" crowd in 3, 2, 1...

I presume that if you moved in high speed towards the planet, like when exiting, you would just crash the ship. So it is preferable to do a more controlled approach to the surface.

When leaving the planet, on the other hand, there isn't really anything along the way which you can crash on.

Technically, I guess that you could just point the nose of your ship towards the surface of the planet, but the game will drop you from supercruise, if I am not mistaken. You could still keep moving in regular flight with the nose pointed to the surface until... "Hull integrity compromised. Eject! Eject!" :p

I know that because that was how my first "landing" went, I was used to how you approach a planet on No Man's Sky xD

After you break mass lock you can jump. That's no different from leaving a station and jumping. If there's something (the planet below) obstructing your path to the destination you can't jump. Again the same as for space flight.

Harder to explain is why if you instead enter supercruise you get mass locked again. Ignore me, that's also consistent.
