The Elite series of games has always been for me about the suspension of reality in a vastly complex universe. Here was a game with no ending but a life as one chooses to live it in a much simpler world than we live in. Think of it as watching the latest Star Wars movie and the suspension of reality immersing yourself into that world for two hours. We do that because we want to be entertained and not thinking about all the issues we have to deal with outside the theater. Now apply it to a game for 1000's of hours. It is a virtual world where you decide how to live in it.
For me Elite Dangerous is what we make of it. It challenges us at every aspect. It is much more difficult than it's predecessors as they were fixed once we knew our way around...and we were eventually done with it. ED is constantly changing and expanding thus what worked last month may change next month. That is what makes this game even more challenging as just in real life nothing ever stays the same. Thus when one succeeds in this world the satisfaction is that much more satisfying...or failure that more devastating.
Comparing Elite to other games and expecting fairness, costs and like results often ends up in frustration, disappointment and anger as we have seen so many times on the Forum. Maybe Frontier Developments could have marketed it better but it is like describing what it is to walk on the moon. One has to walk there to really understand the emotional connection.
Planetary landings in Horizons. Many see it as boring, repetitive and not much to see. Guess what? They were pretty much the same in Frontier: Elite II (1993) but they were THERE which was an amazing game concept at the time. Thus many hard core Elite fans will probably rejoice with the new edition knowing it's going to get so much better given all that has been accomplished so far.
The point is that the player is in total control of how they want to play in this universe. It will never be winning level 9 so advance to level 10. The game will not have any winning declarations to emotionally satisfy a player as so many others do. We decide that. As we advance it is also not up to everyone else Online or especially in the Forum comments to decide for us how the game should be played. This requires imagination which Frontier Developments doesn't supply. They just give the player the opportunity to use it. Without it then yes it will be boring with no purpose. So find what you are looking for emotionally. Only then will you actually "win" the game.
It's easy to do as some go to bed thinking, "Where am I going tomorrow in the game?". Of course their wives are divorcing them because they take Elite to bed with them! Welcome to real life.
Regards,
