(OP) Have you tried using the Fastest Route navigation settings to see if it helps?
When you select fastest route it takes a few minutes to plot all the routes out to the end of the bubble. If you plan on a long trip, you need to leave the map open for it to finish to allow the "plot route" button to become available (if you exit and re-enter the map, it starts the route plotting over again!). You can plot a route past your maximum fuel capacity (these are shown with dotted lines). This is different from maximum fuel usage. Each jump will be plotted at your current weight. So if you plot a route, then fill up with cargo, the course you plotted may no longer be possible (and you'll have to re-plot the route - wait for the lines to get drawn etc).
The max range of the route plotter is about 100 LY.
The reason is that your FSD can jump only as far as the current total ship mass allows it without exceding the fuel jump limit. For example Sidewinder has something like 0.8 per jump, while Cobra has 2.0, but being heavier, also needs bigger FSD drive to have comparable range to Sidewinder.
So you can't blow your whole tank on one jump, even though your fuel would support it, instead you have to jump through many systems to reach your destination. Frontier calls it lore, I call it limiting and needless load of .
